International Baccalaureate (IB)
All boys at King Edward’s School study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in the Sixth Form, which provides a challenging, rigorous and broad education.
The qualification is taught in over 3,200 schools in almost 150 countries, and 140 of these those schools are in the UK.
The IB is much more than a pathway to university; it is designed to provide an intellectual challenge and prepare students for living and working in a rapidly changing world.
An overview of the qualification
The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification, which embodies a holistic educational philosophy. It is designed to give students a rigorous pre-university education that develops expert knowledge in the subjects that most interest them, whilst developing broad skills that are attractive to employers.
Indeed, t he value of the IB Diploma is well-recognised by universities and employers alike and o ur students consistently receive offers from the very best universities , with around 90% each year being accepted by their first choice.
Sixth Formers study six subjects in total, drawn from six groups:
- Language and Literature
- Language Acquisition
- Individuals and Societies
- Mathematics
In addition to these subjects, students are required to complete three Core elements:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
- An Extended Essay
- Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme, which recognises co-curricular activity.
The maximum score for the IB Diploma is 45 points, with six subjects graded out of seven points and an additional three points for the Core elements of TOK and the Extended Essay.
The CAS element is a passing requirement of the Diploma, but is not examined.
The Value of the IB
Explore why the IB Diploma stands out as a valuable educational choice for our Sixth Form students:
Fundamental to King Edward’s School is the overall experience boys gain from being here, not just what they achieve academically. In addition to maintaining the highest of academic standards, the IB encourages co-curricular activity and the pursuit of a diverse range of interests, and prepares pupils for an increasingly globalised, rapidly changing world.
The IB Learner Profile helps develop core skills and aptitudes from critical inquiry and depth of knowledge to reflection and communication.
Studying six subjects in the Sixth Form enables boys to experience a breadth of study and to keep their options open.
The IB encourages independent learning across all areas, which provides excellent preparation for university study. In particular, the Extended Essay familiarises students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university level.
IB is accepted by the best universities for the best courses. There is growing evidence that universities like IB candidates because they have broad knowledge and can demonstrate independence of study. IB also allows much greater differentiation between good candidates and enables pupils to maintain a range of skills that both universities and employers look for.
Meet the IB Director
Mr Petrie has been teaching History since 2010 and joined King Edward’s School as a Teacher of History in 2016. Since that time, he has taken roles as Head of Vardy, CAS coordinator and most recently the IB Director. He studied History at the University of Leicester, dedicating much of his research to early modern British History.
Prior to teaching at King Edward’s School, Mr Petrie taught at an international school in Abu Dhabi between 2013 and 2016 which was his first experience of delivering the International Baccalaureate Diploma. In addition to teaching History, Mr Petrie enjoys delivering Theory of Knowledge lessons and developing Service learning opportunities for students. Outside of school, Mr Petrie tries to travel as much as possible and is a season ticket holder at the Leicester Tigers.

King edward vi foundation public sector equality duty (psed) statement.
This statement sets out the King Edward VI’s Foundation’s commitment to the PSED and the expectations of each of our Academies, our Independent Schools, and the Foundation Office to our pupils, our staff and to our communities to encourage the development of a strong foundation of equality, diversity, and inclusion practice.
Each school will meet its obligations under the PSED by having due regard when making any decisions or implementing policies to the need to:
Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
Foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
At King Edward VI Five Ways School:
We will seek to eliminate discrimination and other unwarranted conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act by:
Maintaining robust policies
Regular training on the Equality Act 2010
Discussing responsibilities at staff and Governor meetings
We seek to advance equality of opportunity by:
Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people which are connected to a particular characteristic
Taking steps to meet different needs of people who have a protected characteristic
Encouraging participation when it is disproportionately low
We seek to foster good relations by:
Including aspects within the curriculum which promote tolerance and friendship
Ensuring awareness of behaviour and anti-bullying policies
Engaging with the local communities
2. Responsibilities
Our schools make themselves as accessible as possible to all pupils, whatever their background or circumstances, by offering an environment that motivates staff and students and promotes productivity, excellence, and sustainable growth.
We are opposed to all forms of prejudice and have a zero-tolerance approach.
Every person in our organisation is responsible for creating and sustaining an inclusive environment based on mutual respect and is given the tools and help to do this. No one, including any pupil, prospective pupil, or other member of the school community will be discriminated against, harassed or victimised because of :
Gender reassignment
Marital or civil partner status
Pregnancy or maternity
Religion or belief
Sexual orientation
All schools will have clearly defined procedures for addressing incidents of a potentially prejudicial, bullying, or discriminatory nature and to ensure that these procedures are available for staff and pupils to obtain.
3. Guiding Principles
In fulfilling the legal obligations referred to above we are also guided by the following nine principles:
Principle 1: All learners are of equal worth
Principle 2: We recognise and respect difference
Principle 3: We foster positive attitudes and relationships, and a shared sense of cohesion and belonging
Principle 4: We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention, and development
Principle 5: We aim to reduce and remove inequalities and barriers
Principle 6: We consult widely
Principle 7: Society should benefit
Principle 8: We base our policies and practice on sound evidence
Principle 9: We work towards measurable equality objectives
4. School’s Accountabilities and Objectives
All schools will take responsibility to appropriately engage with equality diversity and inclusion legislation/statutory duties and responsibilities to ensure that the guiding principles listed above are
In line with our obligations of the PSED, the Foundation will create and publish specific and measurable equality objectives, based on the feedback we have received from schools and pupils and consultations and any evidence that we have collected and published. Schools will also publish their own equality objectives in line with the PSED for their schools.
The objectives that we identify take into account national and local priorities and issues as appropriate.
We keep our equality objectives under review and report annually on progress towards achieving them.
At King Edward VI Five Ways our school’s objectives are as follows:
To promote equality, diversity and inclusion actions across our staff body. This will be achieved through training for staff to eliminate any unconscious bias in the recruitment process and further CPD on diversity, equality and inclusion, to be completed before the beginning of the next academic year.
To enable students to understand, appreciate and respect difference in the world and its people, celebrating the things we share in common across cultural, religious, ethnic and socio-economic communities. This will be achieved through:
The development of new student societies, inviting open membership, to better represent our diversity and to support all to thrive and flourish.
The development in the use of form time, the ‘Learning for Life’ curriculum and the Well-Being programme to facilitate smaller and safer group forums for discussion of inclusion issues in our school.
The development of a ‘Global Voices’ programme for the school year that encourages and supports the sharing of personal stories, hosts inspirational leaders and figures from a variety of communities, and promotes the knowledge and understanding of our diverse cultures, history and heritage through assemblies, events and a celebration of food.
A full review of the curriculum, supported and informed by leading academics from local universities, with the aim of promoting Five Ways as a diverse and inclusive school.
To develop a workforce that reflects the diversity of our community at all levels within the organisation
To further develop student and staff wellbeing and promote positive mental health

King Charles and Queen Camilla's portrait with Prince William and Prince Edward sparks questions from royal fans
The royals participated in the thistle service in edinburgh.
Buckingham Palace shared a historic portrait of the King and Queen with the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh during Royal Week in Scotland.
It showed the foursome in their finery following the Thistle Service at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.
Charles, 75, Camilla, 76, Prince William, 42, and Prince Edward, 60, were pictured wearing the green Mantle of the Order of the Thistle velvet robes, white-plumed hats, and glistening insignia including the Thistle Stars for the ceremony.

While many royal watchers agreed it was a "beautiful" photograph, for others, the portrait provoked questions.
Some of the royal family's social media followers asked why the Duchess of Edinburgh was not wearing robes or included in the picture, despite attending the service.
The reason for this is that Sophie is not a Lady of the Thistle – the highest honour in Scotland. She may one day be given the honour as they are a personal gift of the King.
Prince Edward was appointed to the Order on his 60 th birthday in March, while Queen Camilla was given the honour in June 2023
The order has a complement of 16 knights and ladies, and in addition the Queen, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Rothesay, as the Prince of Wales is known in Scotland, are Royal Knights of the Thistle.
Princess Anne did not travel up to Scotland from the service, as she is still recovering from concussion following her recent accident.
The Princess of Wales was also absent amid her ongoing cancer treatment.
Why Queen Camilla and Prince Edward have been given special honour
Those made Thistle Knights or Ladies have been recognised for holding public office or contributing significantly to national life.
The Queen was appointed chancellor of the University of Aberdeen in 2013 and in a speech to mark the 10th anniversary of her role at the institution, she said: "Coming to this university, and to this city, has always felt a bit like coming home to me.
"Firstly because my father's family came from this part of Scotland, secondly because my husband and I are lucky enough to spend precious time each year in Aberdeenshire, and finally because 10 years ago, I received the great honour of being installed as chancellor of this very special university."
Camilla is patron of Maggie's Cancer Care Centres, founded in Edinburgh in 1996 and now with sites across Scotland, England and Wales.
She is also patron or president of a number of charities based in Scotland, including Crathie Opportunity Holidays, Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and Horseback UK, and is an honorary member of the local Ballater Women’s Institute and the Upper Deeside Art Society.
Edward also holds several patronages of Scottish charitable organisations including the Edinburgh International Festival.

LIVONIA, MI - The first of what was supposed to be many Guy Fieri’s Chicken Guy restaurants in Michigan is now closed for good after opening a little more than a year ago on April 1st. The restaurant, which was located at 30130 Plymouth Road in Livonia, ended operations last night.
There is one other Chicken Guy in Michigan located in Mount Pleasant. Tomey Group owns and operates Chicken Guy in Michigan, which is also a Jimmy John’s franchisee with 50 locations around Metro Detroit. The original plans included opening 20 Chicken Guy restaurants throughout the state.
There’s no word on whether that will still happen and no specific reason is being given as to why the restaurant closed, but the Tomey Group did release this statement to WXYZ .
“We have made the difficult decision to close Chicken Guy Livonia on June 30th. The decision is driven by unforeseen circumstances beyond our control. We are incredibly grateful for the patronage we have received from our loyal customers and the local community, and for our team members and partners who have supported us through this journey. We are dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition for our team members and have offered opportunities within our other businesses.”
Chicken Guy features chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, salad bowls, fries and loaded fries, mac and cheese and milk shakes. It also has nearly two dozen dipping sauces. There are currently about a dozen locations all over the country.
