Arjun and Maha are lovers. Maha’s dad comes from the US to Chennai. Maha orders Arjun to pick her dad in Chennai and bring him to Bangalore. Arjun plans to impress his future father-in-law. But, his Boss’ live-in-partner Sindhu imposes a work to Arjun. As Arjun had to do the emergency work, he hands over the job to his uncle and moves to Bangalore. What happened next? Did he end his trip successfully? What happened to his prospective father-in-law? Watch the film in theaters.

Star Performance

Jishnu has performed well. Almost all the emotions come out well from him. Jishnu’s dialogue delivery is appreciable.

Although the film is a different attempt by Sivaani Senthil, the phone calls frustrate not only the hero but also us. Just with a single character, we feel a bit bored. However, we have to appreciate Sivaani for her different try. Her story is good, but the execution needs some expertise. The production department is good and the technical team too.

What’s Not There?

• It is tiresome to watch a film with the single character
• Phone calls during the travel irritate
• Sivaani should gain some experience is executing

It is an excellent try by Sivaani Senthil. The casting is good and the star gets the appreciation. But, the execution is a bit inexperienced and if Sivaani tries a new script next time, she might get appreciation. Although the film is a bit tiresome, we could watch the film for Sivaani’s new attempt and Jishnu's performance.

ஜிஷ்னுவின் மாமனாரை அழைத்து வரும் பொறுப்பை ஏற்கும் சிந்து, நாயகனை பழிவாங்கும் முயற்சியில் இறங்குகிறார். இதனால் பல்வேறு பிரச்சினைகளை சந்திக்கிறார் ஜிஷ்னு. அவற்றில் இருந்து அவர் எப்படி மீண்டு வருகிறார், மாமனாரை இம்ப்ரஸ் செய்து காதலியை கரம் பிடித்தாரா என்பது படத்தின் மீதிக்கதை. படத்தில் ஆரம்பம் முதல் இறுதி வரை ஒரே ஒரு கேரக்டர் தான். மற்ற எல்லா கேரக்டரும், ஒலி ஓவியமாக போனிலேயே வருகிறார்கள். சென்னை - பெங்களூரு நெடுஞ்சாலையில் தான் முழுக்கதையும் பயணிக்கிறது. ஒரு நபரை மட்டுமே வைத்துக்கொண்டு படம் எடுத்த இயக்குனர் ஷிவானி செந்திலின் தைரியத்தை பாராட்டலாம்.

தன்னுடைய பொறுப்பை அறிந்து, படத்தை தோளில் சுமந்திருக்கிறார் நாயகன் ஜிஷ்னு மேனன். விதவிதமான ரியாக்ஷன்கள் மூலம் படத்தை நகர்த்தி செல்கிறார். அதுமட்டுமல்ல இன்றைய ஐ.டி. இளைஞர்களை அப்படியே பிரதிபலித்திருக்கிறார். ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் கணேஷ் பரமஹம்சாவும், இசையமைப்பாளர் விக்னேஷ் பாயும் படத்தை சுவாரஸ்யமாக கொண்டு செல்ல முயன்றிருக்கிறார்கள்.

தொடர்ந்து போன்கால்கள் மட்டுமே வந்து கொண்டிருப்பது ஒரு கட்டத்தில் எரிச்சலை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. ஆனால் படத்தில் ஹீரோவும் அதே எரிச்சல் ரியாக்ஷன் தந்து சற்று இளைப்பார செய்கிறார். இருந்தாலும் படம் பார்க்கும் போது ஏற்படும் அலுப்பை தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை.

சில இடங்களில் ஏற்படும் எரிச்சலை மட்டும் தாங்கிக் கொண்டு பொறுமையோடு படம் பார்க்க வேண்டும். ஒரு சாதாரண கதையை வித்தியாசமான கோணத்தில் பார்த்த திருப்தி கிடைக்கும். இயக்குனர் ஷிவானி செந்திலின் முயற்சிக்காக படத்தை பாராட்டலாம்.

'Kargil' movie review: A long, tiresome ride

With films bearing ‘India’s first’ tags coming out almost every Friday, 2018 has been quite an interesting year in a sense. Debutant Sivaani Senthil’s Kargil joins this not-so-exclusive club as ‘South India’s first film to star a single character’. The director deserves a pat for staying true to the genre and leaving out needless commercial elements. Excluding the intro song, Undhan Heart, which features Prerna Sadani, nowhere in the film do we see any actor other than Jishnu Menon.

Kargil starts with Arjun (Jishnu), a happy-go-lucky software professional, leaving for Bangalore in his car--which is where he stays for the rest of the film, as he drives and makes phone calls. He is on his way to attend a crucial on-site client interview, to actualise the lie he’s told his girlfriend Maha and impress her father, who is returning from the US. Things take an awry turn when Arjun’s ex-girlfriend and current MD, Sindhu, ends up going to pick Maha’s father up from the airport. She turns possessive and starts plotting to get him back.

The problem with Kargil starts right from the deceptive title. The film has no relevance to war whatsoever, and the only connection the title has seems to stem from the fact that the film is set inside a car, and car-il (in a car) vaguely sounds like Kargil.

Films with a single actor aren’t completely alien to Indian cinema. This unique league of films was kickstarted by Sunil Dutt with the psychological drama, Yaadein, back in 1964. Though many films on similar lines have been made in the five decades since, the two key factors needed to make such a film work have always been constant — casting of an impeccable actor and a strong screenplay. Unfortunately, Kargil fails on both these counts.

Stephen Knight’s 2013 film, Locke, also set in a car with a single actor, seems to have been the inspiration for Kargil. That film worked beautifully because the chaos and drama happening in the protagonist’s life necessitates that the hero make and answer calls. Arjun in Kargil, on the other hand, invites problems into his life by calling people. It might have been just another day in his life if he had only decided to put his mobile in flight mode. But for some weird reason, Arjun keeps answering phone calls drawing more and more misery. This, in turn, makes it hard for us to empathise with him. The loopholes in the plot apart, the stagnant camera angles end up making our experience even more unpleasant. And despite being told that almost all the characters in the film are from a corporate background, the voice actors and even the lead struggle to deliver the simplest of dialogues in English.

The only saving grace comes in the form of the humour portions involving a wrong call from someone named Beep Sagayam. Though it is completely irrelevant to the main storyline, this bit is well-written, and this man ends up being the most realistic character in the film.

Kargil - a unique Tamil movie that experiments with a single actor

Honestly, Tamil cinema cannot be faulted on experimentation and plot novelty. But it often – and invariably – fails in execution, direction and performance. Who could have thought of a film where the camera plays the hero. Or just about. In Mundasuppati , a whole village is paranoid about being photographed, and the story weaves in a brilliant climax.

Here a photographer eloping with his lover on a scooter stops a murderous mob chasing him by pointing, not a gun, but a camera at it. The crowd baying for his blood scoots in fear. And Aadukalam (Playground) turns a tale around rooster fight. Now, we have director Sivaani Senthil all set to release his movie, strangely titled Kargil , a one-actor show!

The war here, he avers, does not happen on the high mountains, not with bombs and bullets – but between a man and a woman. And believe it or not, inside a small car. What may sound really fascinating for film fans in Tamil Nadu is that Kargil has a single actor, played by Jishu Menon. He talks on the telephone while he is driving from Chennai to Bengaluru. Speaking to several characters, including his girlfriend, he addresses and perhaps resolves issues involving his personal affair and his professional assignment.

Interestingly, he gets into a heated argument with his girl that gets accentuated with calls coming in from his boss, a neighbourhood guy and his ex-flame.

Although a one-actor movie may seem unique in the history of Tamil cinema, we have seen such works elsewhere. The 1964 Hindi movie, Yaadein , had just Sunil Dutt (also produced and directed by him), and the only other actor was Nargis Dutt – who was seen in the shadows very briefly at the end.

Outside India, I remember one film, a French one, that brilliantly captured the one-actor concept. Titled, La Femme Defendue (The Banished Woman, by Philippe Heral), it showed just one actress, Muriel (essayed by the ravishingly beautiful Isabelle Carre) for 90 minutes, and it could manage to keep the highly cinema literate and critical audiences at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival engrossed.

Most of the run-time was allocated to showing the girl's face – which had this enormous ability to express, even mimic, but never for a moment seemed artificial or inappropriate. She is seen talking to her boyfriend, Francois, in a hotel room, he is sitting across her. We never see him, but for a fleeting moment. And then the game of seduction begins – by him, who slowly convinces her to strip. Finally, we see a naked Muriel. There is, of course, a story there that is revealed during the couple's chat.

I remember asking my critic friends from across the globe whether Harel would have been able to keep us engaged had Carre been less striking. Maybe not.

Well, Senthil has a mighty task ahead. For, it is a man who will be in the eye of the camera in his upcoming Kargil . A few songs have been thrown in. Some images of the girl are also to be seen in the stills. A bold move alright.

Kargil movie review: After a point, the film becomes monotonous

Debutant Shivaani Senthil’s film Kargil, boasts of first of its kind in Tamil cinema, which has only a single character throughout. But, films with a single character are not new to K’town. We have seen this attempt with a Jai Akash movie a few years ago. And again Kargil starts with a romantic song where the lead lady Prerna Sadani is featured along with the hero Jishnu Menon, though the former disappears from the scene later.

The title has nothing to do with war. Here Kargil actually is the war between two hearts. The entire story unfolds in a car where Arjun (Jishnu Menon) travels from Chennai to Bengaluru to attend an interview for a US project. Small conflict occurs between Arjun and his love Maha, which grows more and more with added problems from his boss, ex girl friend Sindhu and a local guy Beep Sahayam. And all these conflicts and conversations are through a stream of continuous phone calls. We hear only their voices.

Though you need a big hero with an amazing screen presence to make such a genre to work, credit has to be given to newcomer Jishnu for pulling it off easily. His earnest attempts to engage the audiences are praise worthy. After a point, the film becomes monotonous. Shivaani’s idea is laudable, but had he concentrated on infusing few more interesting elements, it would have made the right impact. Ganesh Paramahamsa’s cinematography is good.
