The heading provides your contact information, the date you are writing, and the address of the company to which you are applying.

For your contact information, you will want to include the following:

  • The address where you can be reached ( if you live at college, will it be more accessible to include the local address or your permanent address? )
  • Phone number
  • Fax number (if applicable)
  • E-mail address

Then, you will skip a line and write the full date ( month, day, year ). Follow this by skipping a space and writing the contact information for the person to whom you are writing:

  • Name of the specific person
  • Title of that person (if available)
  • Address of the company

If you’re applying to a company without a job application, just search through a company’s “about us” page, or look through the company’s LinkedIn page.

There are three things that you should include:

  • The hiring manager’s name
  • Their position
  • The name of the company

If you can’t find one, don’t sweat it too much. Just skip this information, and address it to “hiring manager”.

Optional things to include

There are other optional things that you can add to your header which help to personalize it. Here is some other personal information that you can include in your header:

  • Your professional social media profiles: This includes sites like LinkedIn, GitHub, or Medium, but would exclude personal social media sites.
  • Your personal website
  • A professional portfolio
  • Your address or the city where you live: This used to be common when you were mailing your cover letter and resume to a hiring manager, but is no longer necessary when sending a cover letter in an email.
  • The title of the position you have at your current workplace
  • The title for the job posting or the reference number: You can find the title for the job posting on any job description, and you can place it right after the date to help clarify the position you’ll be applying to.

As with a resume, it’s important to start your cover letter with your contact details at the top. These should be in your cover letter’s header, separated neatly from the bulk of your text.

  • Full Name. Your first and last name should stand out at the top.
  • Job Title. Match the professional title underneath your name to the exact job title of the position you’re applying for. Hiring managers often hire for several roles at once, so giving them this cue about what role you’re after helps things go smoother.
  • Email Address. Always use a professional and easy-to-spell email address. Ideally, it should combine your first and last names.
  • Phone Number. Add a number where the hiring manager can easily reach you.
  • Location. Add your city and state/country, no need for more details.
  • Relevant Links (optional). You can add links to websites or social media profiles that are relevant to your field. Examples include a LinkedIn profile , Github, or an online portfolio.

Then it’s time to add the recipient’s contact details, such as:

  • Hiring Manager's Name. If you can find the name of the hiring manager, add it.
  • Hiring Manager's Title. While there’s no harm in writing “hiring manager,” if they’re the head of the department, we recommend you use that title accordingly.
  • Company Name. Make sure to write the name of the company you're applying to.
  • Location. The city and state/country are usually enough information here, too.
  • Date of Writing (Optional). You can include the date you wrote your cover letter for an extra professional touch.

Once you’ve properly listed all the contact information, it’s time to start writing the content of the cover letter.

The first thing you need to do here is to address your cover letter directly to the hiring manager.

In fact, you want to address the hiring manager personally .

Forget the old “Dear Sir or Madam” or the impersonal “To Whom It May Concern.” You want to give your future boss a good impression and show them that you did your research before sending in your application.

So, how do you find out who’s the hiring manager?

First, check the job ad. The hiring manager’s name might be listed somewhere in it.

If that doesn’t work, check the company’s LinkedIn page. You just need to look up the head of the relevant department you’re applying to, and you’re all set.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of Communication Specialist at Novorésumé. The hiring manager is probably the Head of Communications or the Chief Communications Officer.

Here’s what you should look for on LinkedIn:

And there you go! You have your hiring manager.

But let’s say you’re applying for a position as a server . In that case, you’d be looking for the “restaurant manager” or “food and beverage manager.”

If the results don’t come up with anything, try checking out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

Make sure to address them as Mr. or Ms., followed by their last name. If you’re not sure about their gender or marital status, you can just stick to their full name, like so:

  • Dear Mr. Kurtuy,

But what if you still can’t find the hiring manager’s name, no matter where you look?

No worries. You can direct your cover letter to the company, department, or team as a whole, or just skip the hiring manager’s name.

#4. Write an Eye-Catching Introduction

First impressions matter, especially when it comes to your job search.

Hiring managers get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The biggest problem with most opening paragraphs is that they’re usually extremely generic. Here’s an example:

  • My name is Jonathan, and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a Sales Manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

See the issue here? This opening paragraph doesn’t say anything except the fact that you’ve worked the job before.

And do you know who else has similar work experience? All the other applicants you’re competing with.

Instead, you want to start with some of your top achievements to grab the reader’s attention. And to get the point across, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.

Your opening paragraph should also show the hiring manager a bit about why you want this specific job. For example, mention how the job relates to your plans for the future or how it can help you grow professionally. This will show the hiring manager that you’re not just applying left and right—you’re actually enthusiastic about getting this particular role.

Now, let’s make our previous example shine:

Dear Mr. Smith,

My name’s Michael, and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked as a Sales Representative with Company X, another fin-tech company , for 3+ years, where I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month and beat the KPIs by around 40%. I believe that my previous industry experience, passion for finance , and excellence in sales make me the right candidate for the job.

The second candidate starts with what they can do for the company in the future and immediately lists an impressive and relevant achievement. Since they’re experienced in the same industry and interested in finance, the hiring manager can see they’re not just a random applicant.

From this introduction, it’s safe to say that the hiring manager would read the rest of this candidate’s cover letter.

#5. Use the Cover Letter Body for Details

The next part of your cover letter is where you can go into detail about what sets you apart as a qualified candidate for the job.

The main thing you need to remember here is that you shouldn’t make it all about yourself . Your cover letter is supposed to show the hiring manager how you relate to the job and the company you’re applying to.

No matter how cool you make yourself sound in your cover letter, if you don’t tailor it to match what the hiring manager is looking for, you’re not getting an interview.

To get this right, use the job ad as a reference when writing your cover letter. Make sure to highlight skills and achievements that match the job requirements, and you’re good to go.

Since this part of your cover letter is by far the longest, you should split it into at least two paragraphs.

Here’s what each paragraph should cover:

Explain Why You’re the Perfect Candidate for the Role

Before you can show the hiring manager that you’re exactly what they’ve been looking for, you need to know what it is they’re looking for.

Start by doing a bit of research. Learn what the most important skills and responsibilities of the role are according to the job ad, and focus on any relevant experience you have that matches them.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of a Facebook Advertiser. The top requirements on the job ad are:

  • Some skills in advertising on other platforms (Google Search + Twitter)
  • Excellent copywriting skills

So, in the body of your cover letter, you need to show how you meet these requirements. Here’s an example of what that can look like:

In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $40,000+ . As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. I created the ad copy and images, picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

Other than Facebook advertising, I’ve also delved into other online PPC channels, including:

Chances are, you’ll find all the information you need either on the company website or on job-search websites like Jobscan or Glassdoor.

Then, pick your favorite thing about the company and talk about it in your cover letter.

But don’t just describe the company in its own words just to flatter them. Be super specific—the hiring manager can see through any fluff.

For example, if you’re passionate about their product and you like the company’s culture of innovation and independent work model, you can write something like:

I really admire how Company XYZ strives for excellence in all its product lines, creating market-leading tech. As someone who thrives in a self-driven environment, I truly believe that I’ll be a great match for your Product Design team.

So, make sure to do your fair share of research and come up with good reasons why you're applying to that specific company.

#6. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Finally, it’s time to conclude your cover letter.

In the final paragraph, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't make in the previous paragraphs. Do you have anything left to say? If there’s any other information that could help the hiring manager make their decision, mention it here. If not, just recap your key selling points so far, such as key skills and expertise.
  • Express gratitude. Politely thanking the hiring manager for their time is always a good idea.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. The very last sentence in your cover letter should be a call to action. This means you should ask the hiring manager to do something, like call you and discuss your application or arrange an interview.
  • Remember to sign your cover letter. Just add a formal closing line and sign your name at the bottom.

The new prime minister is quickly being thrown in at the deep end of his new job - as he's expected to represent the UK on the world stage just days after his appointment.

Sir Keir Starmer will debut on the international stage as Britain's leader when he flies to Washington DC for the NATO summit on Tuesday.

We'll get an early indication on his stance on the conflict in Ukraine - with discussion in the US set to be dominated by Russia's continuing war - although he had said throughout his time as leader of the opposition that any government he formed would continue to support Kyiv.

Sir Keir was a strong supporter of the Tory government's substantial financial and military contributions to Ukraine - and has pledged that his government would do the same. 

He said earlier: "It is for me to be absolutely clear that the first duty of my government is security and defence, to make clear our unshakable support of NATO.

"And of course to reiterate, as I did to President Zelenskyy yesterday, the support that we will have in this country and with our allies towards Ukraine."

That's not where it ends for Sir Keir on the international stage either, as he'll then host the European Political Community summit on 18 July.

That comes just a day after the state opening of parliament and the King's Speech - which sets out the new government's agenda.

From the cost of living crisis and small boat crossings to the drive for green energy and the war in Ukraine, the Labour government has its work cut out.

To get a sense of the challenges facing Sir Keir Starmer, we spoke to our specialist correspondents about their patches.

When she was home secretary, Priti Patel made a concerted investment in tackling county lines drug dealing and was often seen out on dawn raids with the police, her focus on disrupting the gangs.

Labour, it seems, will put a greater emphasis on crime prevention, keeping children out of gangs by launching a "Young Futures programme".

New Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has spoken about the "tough love" plan to tackle knife crime, which would see youth workers placed in A&E units, custody centres and pupil referral units.

Ms Cooper also promises a police reform plan to bring in mandatory standards in policing so that vetting, training and dealing with misconduct doesn't vary across forces.

The youngest MP is likely 22-year-old Sam Carling in North West Cambridgeshire.

Born in 2002, he was a toddler when his opponent, Conservative Shailesh Vara, first won North West Cambridgeshire in 2005.

He beat the veteran MP by a razor-thin 39 votes.

"Thank you so much to everyone in North West Cambridgeshire that came out to vote for me yesterday. I am beyond honoured to have been elected as your MP," he said.

He previously said he entered politics to "fight the continuing decline in public services" under the Conservatives.

Mr Carling will be nicknamed "baby of the House" when he enters the Commons, taking over the traditional moniker from Labour MP Keir Mather.

He graduated from the University of Cambridge last year and has been a councillor at Cambridge City Council since 2022, according to his LinkedIn.

Nigel Farage says he will provide "opposition in the country" - not necessarily parliament.

Reform UK underperformed exit poll expectations, winning five out of a forecast 13.

"Everyone thinks about opposition as being what happens in parliament. We will do what we can with five in parliament," he said.

"What I will do for certain is provide real opposition in the country."

Mr Farage continued: "We are not downhearted, we know the system really, really hard. We know it is very unfair on us. But you know what, we're a new party, we've built the bridgehead into parliament."

Labour has made some big promises on clean energy. If they deliver on them, it could bring meaningful long-term reductions in energy bills, as well as improve energy security and help reduce the dangers from climate change.

There are companies waiting to invest if Labour can ease the current planning and supply-chain constraints. But how they plan to deliver on other less investment-friendly pledges, like improving energy efficiency of homes and installing heat-pumps in social housing, without spending a lot more public money isn't clear.

Like their predecessors, Labour wants the UK to become a "science superpower". They want to start by healing rifts between researchers and the last government, caused first by Brexit which severed funding sources from the EU, then by the Tories' "war on woke" that seriously undermined trust among universities and saw academics unfairly targeted for their views.

A first test will be the details on a 10-year budget for key research institutions which Labour claims will elevate UK biosciences to "superpower" status. But so far there's been no detail on what those budgets might be.

One interesting area to watch is Labour's stance on AI. The UK's close relationship with big tech firms such as Google has helped us become a heavyweight in AI research and deployment, bringing real economic benefit. Maintaining Labour's commitment to protecting workers from an AI takeover without capitulating to Silicon Valley will be a tightrope walk.

While the last seat of the election has not been officially declared, the SNP candidate has conceded the two-horse race.

Drew Hendry said he would not win and will not attend the second recount in Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire - which is technically still ongoing - due to prior commitments.

The Liberal Democrats have claimed victory for their candidate Angus MacDonald in the constituency, which would be their 72nd seat.

Mr Hendry said: "It has been an absolute joy to serve the people of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey for the past nine years.

"I am obviously disappointed not to be continuing that representation under the new Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire boundary and wish the new MP every success in his new role.

"People need an MP who will fight for their needs both local and at UK level and during this cost-of-living crisis, they have never needed help and assistance more."

Our  political correspondent Rob Powell was listening in to Sir Keir Starmer's first news conference as prime minister.

He says that, from what he heard, "this wasn't a politician who was trying to sell his own brand or party.

"It wasn't a politician trying to make waves, make news.

"It wasn't a politician trying to use flowery language or soaring rhetoric. 

"This was Keir Starmer, the public administrator. Keir Starmer, in charge of the levers of power, methodically going through what he's been doing since he got into office, and then methodically laying out what he wants to do and what practically he will be doing."

The trips to the four nations of the UK and subsequent visit to Nato shows Sir Keir wants to get "straight into the business of meeting the people that he will be working with to achieve his aims".

On policy, Rob says there was a hint that taxes may need to be raised or spending cut, and "in these first hundred days, we may well be getting something that maybe wasn't set out before in the campaign and in the manifesto, but that does address some of the serious problems that are going on at the moment".

Rob says his overall takeaway is that the news conference showed the kind of PM Sir Keir would be.

He says this was "not someone that wants to be flashy" but rather "someone that wants to solve problems methodically".

But Rob cautions that Sir Keir will need to bring his party and the public with him, which can involve "flowery language" and "rhetoric" to get people on board.

"But then again, when you've got a majority the size of Keir Starmer, maybe he feels that he doesn't need to be a salesman anymore," Rob concludes.

The Sunday Mirror asks Sir Keir Starmer how important diversity in the cabinet is for him.

The PM says he is "really proud of the fact" that his cabinet reflects the aspiration that lies "at the heart of the country".

He is also asked about whether he will appoint more peers to make them ministers.

Sir Keir says he doesn't want to get ahead of himself, but more ministers will be appointed in general.

The Sunday Telegraph asks the prime minister whether he is happy with the NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard.

"This is not aimed at the chief executive of the NHS. It is a reflection on the failure of leadership of the last government," says Sir Keir.

"But it is a raw honesty about the state of the NHS because we will not fix it if we are not honest."

He says it will be tough to hear if you work in the NHS, because they have put a "huge amount in, in difficult circumstances".

"Our job now is not just to say who broke it - the last government - but to get on and start to fix it."

Sir Keir is asked whether he can give a guarantee on if he'll get rid of the two child benefit cap - which restricts child tax credit and universal credit to the first two children.

The prime minister says the answer today is no different to a week ago.

"I said some tough things in the campaign because I meant them. And I wasn't going to do what others had done, which is to say sweet things on the way in only to do a press conference like this and say we can't do any of that."

He says the government intends to have economic stability and the two child benefit cap is one example of a difficult decision he has taken.

"We intend to ensure that we stick to our rules and that is why I can't make a commitment on the two child benefit."

However, he says the government will reduce child poverty.
