IELTS Writing Task 2: Environment (Opinion Essay)

Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do too little.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer:

Many people believe the responsibility for protecting the environment should belong to politicians rather than individuals who are hardly capable of doing anything. In my opinion, individuals can actually do a lot so they should share such responsibility with politicians.

To begin with, individuals can contribute greatly to environmental protection by doing it together. For instance, they can protect wildlife by encouraging each other to boycott companies that make money at the expense of animals. The effect of such an action could be little if performed by a few citizens but once everyone joins hands, their impacts on the environment would suffice to make changes. One single post on Facebook reporting Vaselineā€™s use of rabbits and monkeys for testing purposes may not matter, but with thousands of shares, internet users across the globe have successfully forced this company to abandon animal testing and release those animals to the wild.

Therefore, not only politicians but also individuals should assume this responsibility. Because both of them are living on the same planet, any problem resulting from environmental degradation would negatively affect everybody no matter who they are. For example, in case of air pollution, people are all at higher risk of respiratory diseases regardless of their occupations. Even their childrenā€™s well-being is also threatened if they are born and raised in such a polluted atmosphere. Therefore, preserving their habitats is synonymous with protecting their future generation.

In conclusion, the responsibility of safeguarding the environment should fall on all people in society whether they are politicians or not, as every individual is able to do this.

Below is a sample of an Essay on Environment to give you an idea of the way to write one:

The natural surroundings that enable life to thrive, nurture, and destroy on our planet called earth are referred to as an environment. The natural environment is vital to the survival of life on Earth, allowing humans, animals, and other living things to thrive and evolve naturally. However, our ecosystem is being harmed as a result of certain wicked and selfish human actions. It is the most essential issue, and everyone should understand how to safeguard our environment and maintain the natural balance on this planet for life to continue to exist.

Environment means all the natural things around us such as land, air, water, plants, animals, solid materials, garbage, sun, forest, and other things. These maintain a balance of healthy nature and make the survival of all living things on earth possible. However, due to the need for resources for development, we have deformed the environment in several ways. These changes have hampered our environment and balance of nature. We are risking our existence and the life of future generations by ignoring these changes.

The changes made by humans in the environment has to lead to severe damages like global warming, climate change, depletion of water tables, scarcity of water resources, and many more. In the coming time, the world is going to experience conditions that are going to be worse. As a result, the forthcoming generations might not get access to many resources. Forest fire in Australia and Amazon is the aftermath of human ignorance toward the environment.

Life is only possible if the balance between natural resources is maintained by all of us. It is high time that humans should come together and work for the betterment of our surroundings. By adapting, eco-friendly or sustainable methods for development, we can be cautious about saving our surroundings along with making advancements.

Nature provides an environment that nourishes life on the planet. The environment encompasses everything humans need to live, including water, air, sunshine, land, plants, animals, forests, and other natural resources. Our surroundings play a critical role in enabling the existence of healthy life on the planet. However, due to man-made technical advancements in the current period, our environment is deteriorating day by day. As a result, environmental contamination has risen to the top of our priority list.

Environmental pollution has a detrimental impact on our everyday lives in a variety of ways, including socially, physically, economically, emotionally, and cognitively. Contamination of the environment causes a variety of ailments that can last a person’s entire life. It is not a problem of a neighborhood or a city; it is a global issue that cannot be handled by a single person’s efforts. It has the potential to end life in a day if it is not appropriately handled. Every ordinary citizen should participate in the government’s environmental protection effort.

Between June 5 and June 16, World Environment Day is commemorated to raise awareness about the environment and to educate people about its importance. On this day, awareness initiatives are held in a variety of locations.

The environment is made up of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, insects, water bodies, fish, humans, trees, microbes, and many other things. Furthermore, they all contribute to the ecosystem.

The physical, social, and cultural environments are the three categories of environments. Besides, various scientists have defined different types and numbers of environments.

1. Do not leave rubbish in public areas. 2. Minimize the use of plastic 3. Items should be reduced, reused, and recycled. 4. Prevent water and soil contamination

Environment Essay Topics: How to Answer

Topics can revolve around different themes and situations. For example, you may get questions like an environment conservation essay, which will present a problem and ask about possible solutions. There can also be opinion-based questions that ask for your opinions based on any situation.

Although the contexts of all these questions might vary, the basic layout will remain the same.

Here is a standard format for the environment essay topics:

Introduction (2-3 Sentences):

  • You can begin your essay by highlighting the key theme of the question.
  • Give some context to it and describe what your focus areas are in the essay.

Example: ā€˜ Environment degradation has become a global problem with rising industrialisation. Deforestation rates have increased worldwide, creating challenges for many lives. In this essay, I will discuss the key reasons behind this situation and some possible measures to solve this issue.ā€™

Body Section (2-3 Paragraphs):

  • You can break this section into 2-3 paragraphs addressing a specific topic. For example, in problem-solving questions, one paragraph will deal with the problem and the other with solutions.
  • Focus on a balanced approach. It should not sound like being biased towards any particular stand.
  • Constantly enrich your ideas with supporting facts and evidence, such as data and examples.
  • And most importantly, organise your thoughts and ideas clearly to create a sense for the reader.

Example: ā€˜ The excessive use of fossil fuels is one of the primary reasons behind environmental degradation. For example, the burning of oils releases greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming. Switching to renewable energy alternatives like solar, wind and water can reduce carbon emissions and help fight climate change.ā€™

Opinion (Optional)

  • If the question asks you to share your opinion, clearly present your personal views in this paragraph.
  • Weigh your opinion with the relevant evidence, citing stats and personal experiences.
  • Avoid being highly emotional in presenting your arguments. Instead, be more logical and to the point.

Example: ā€˜In my opinion, individuals play a vital role in reducing environmental degradation. By adopting eco-friendly habits, we can carefully use resources and take alternative measures wherever possible.ā€™

Conclusion (2-3 Sentences)

  • Summarise the whole crux of your essay in 2-3 lines.
  • Also, provide some positive suggestions related to your topic.

For example, ā€˜Handling environmental challenges requires combined efforts at both individual and societal levels. Adopting sustainable practices, using renewable energy sources, and raising awareness of careful resource management can help us tackle these challenges. So let us come together and create a sustainable future for all.ā€™

Environment Essay Topics: Sample Answer

Question 1:   Environmental Problems Essay Topic

Write an essay on the following topic:

Some say industrial growth is necessary to solve poverty, while others say it creates environmental problems. Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer 1:

Whether industrial growth contributes to poverty alleviation or harms our environment is a matter of discussion. Some say it has provided significant employment opportunities, while others highlight the environmental impacts. This essay will focus on these varied perspectives and my opinion.

On one hand, growth enthusiasts believe that industries contribute a lot to poverty alleviation and raising the standard of living. They provide the people with various job opportunities and contribute to the economic growth. Once people have jobs, they consume more; thus, the demand for products/services increases. This income generation will boost production and require more people to do the jobs, creating more employment opportunities. This cycle helps stimulate the economy as a whole, thereby reducing poverty.

On the other hand, individuals concerned about the environment often highlight the damages caused by industrialisation. We cannot deny that these factories release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. This release of chemicals pollutes our surroundings and raises health problems. Moreover, industrialisation creates the need for more resources like land and water, accelerating their depletion.

Considering both these perspectives, the industries are helping the economy grow while creating environmental challenges. Therefore, we must find a way to balance economic growth and environmental protection.

The government can play a broader role here. It should establish strict rules and regulations for organisations to reduce their environmental impacts. The government can also invest in renewable resources and monitor the effects of industrialisation to protect our environment.

Industries can potentially reduce poverty; however, protecting the environment is also essential. Therefore, we should adopt the right strategies and require industries to follow these procedures. In this way, we balance economic growth and environmental protection.
