Definition: to have an influence on someone or something, or to cause a change in someone or something.

Example: Experts agree that coffee affects the body in ways we have not yet studied.

Definition: to increase the size or effect of something.

Example: It has been shown that this drug amplifies the side effects that were experienced by patients in previous trials.

Definition: to say that something is certainly true .

Example: Smith asserts that his findings are valid, despite criticism by colleagues.

Characterizes

Definition: Something that characterizes another thing is typical of it.

Example: His early paintings are characterized by a distinctive pattern of blue and yellow.

Definition: to say that something is true or is a fact , although you cannot prove it and other people might not believe it.

Example: Smith claims that the study is the first of its kind, and very different from the 2015 study he conducted.

Definition: to make something clear or easier to understand by giving more details or a simpler explanation .

Example: The professor clarified her statement with a later, more detailed, statement.

Definition: t o collect information from different places and arrange it in a book , report , or list .

Example: After compiling the data, the scientists authored a ten-page paper on their study and its findings.

Definition: to judge or decide something after thinking carefully about it.

Example: Doctor Jensen concluded that the drug wasn’t working, so he switched his patient to a new medicine.

Definition: to show or find the difference between things that are compared .

Example: Smith differentiates between the two theories in paragraph 4 of the second part of the study.

Example: The new findings do not diminish the findings of previous research; rather, it builds on it to present a more complicated theory about the effects of global warming.

Definition: to cause people to stop respecting someone or believing in an idea or person .

Example: The details about the improper research done by the institution discredits the institution’s newest research.

Distinguishes

Definition: to notice or understand the difference between two things, or to make one person or thing seem different from another.

Example: Our study seems similar to another one by Duke University: how can we distinguish ourselves and our research from this study?

Definition: to add more information to or explain something that you have said.

Example: In this new paper, Smith elaborates on theories she discussed in her 2012 book.

Definition:  to represent a quality or an idea exactly .

Example: Shakespeare embodies English theater, but few can understand the antiquated (old) form of English that is used in the plays.

Definition: to copy something achieved by someone else and try to do it as well as they have.

Example: Although the study emulates some of the scientific methods used in previous research, it also offers some inventive new research methods.

Definition: to improve the quality , amount , or strength of something.

Example: The pharmaceutical company is looking for ways to enhance the effectiveness of its current drug for depression.

Definition: to discover or get proof of something.

Example: The award establishes the main causes of global warming.

Definition: to make someone remember something or feel an emotion .

Example: The artist’s painting evokes the work of some of the painters from the early 1800s.

Definition: to show something.

Example: Some of the research study participants exhibit similar symptoms while taking the medicine.

Facilitates

Definition: to make something possible or easier .

Example: The equipment that facilitates the study is expensive and of high-quality.

Definition: the main or central point of something, especially of attention or interest .

Example: The author focuses on World War II, which is an era she hasn’t written about before.

Foreshadows

Definition: to act as a warning or sign of a future event .

Example: The sick bird at the beginning of the novel foreshadows the illness the main character develops later in the book.

Definition: to develop all the details of a plan for doing something.

Example: Two teams of scientists formulated the research methods for the study.

Definition: to cause something to exist .

Example: The study’s findings have generated many questions about this new species of frog in South America.

Example: The author, Dr. Smith, highlights the need for further studies on the possible causes of cancer among farm workers.

Definition: to recognize a problem , need, fact , etc. and to show that it exists .

Example: Through this study, scientists were able to identify three of the main factors causing global warming.

Illustrates

Definition:   to show the meaning or truth of something more clearly , especially by giving examples .

Example: Dr. Robin’s study illustrates the need for more research on the effects of this experimental drug.

Definition: to communicate an idea or feeling without saying it directly .

Example: The study implies that there are many outside factors (other than diet and exercise) which determine a person’s tendency to gain weight.

Incorporates

Definition: to include something as part of something larger .

Example: Dr. Smith incorporates research findings from 15 other studies in her well-researched paper.

Definition: to show, point , or make clear in another way.

Example: Overall, the study indicates that there is no real danger (other than a lack of sleep) to drinking three cups of coffee per day.

Definition: to form an opinion or guess that something is true because of the information that you have.

Example: From this study about a new medicine, we can infer that it will work similarly to other drugs that are currently being sold.

Definition: to tell someone about parti c ular facts .

Example: Dr. Smith informs the reader that there are some issues with this study: the oddly rainy weather in 2017 made it difficult for them to record the movements of the birds they were studying.

Definition: to suggest , without being direct , that something unpleasant is true .

Example: In addition to the reported conclusions, the study insinuates that there are many hidden dangers to driving while texting.

Definition: to combine two or more things in order to become more effective .

Example: The study about the popularity of social media integrates Facebook and Instagram hashtag use.

Legitimizes

Definition: to make something legal or acceptable .

Example: Although the study legitimizes the existence of global warming, some will continue to think it is a hoax.

Definition: to make a problem bigger or more important .

Example: In conclusion, the scientists determined that the new pharmaceutical actually magnifies some of the symptoms of anxiety.

Definition: something that a copy can be based on because it is an extremely good example of its type .

Example: The study models a similar one from 1973, which needed to be redone with modern equipment.

Definition: to cause something to have no effect .

Example: This negates previous findings that say that sulphur in wine gives people headaches.

Definition: to not give enough c a re or attention to people or things that are your responsibility .

Example: The study neglects to mention another study in 2015 that had very different findings.

Example: The problems with the equipment obscures the study.

The best academic papers will use such verbs to support their arguments or concepts, so it is important that your paper contains at least three power verbs.

Academic papers of all disciplines are often filled with overlong and complicated sentences that are attempting to convey specific ideas and concepts. Active and powerful verbs are useful both to the reader and the author of the paper.

For the reader who is trying to tackle these ideas and concepts, the power verbs provide clarity and purpose. Compare the following sentences:

  • This paper will say that there were two reasons for the start of the civil war.
  • This paper asserts that there were two reasons for the start of the civil war.

Clearly the second sentence is more confident, direct, and authoritative because it has replaced the dull ‘says’ with ‘asserts.’ For the writer, the power verb expresses confidence in the idea being presented.

about it and its implementation. Include the purpose of the project, the problem it addresses, and constraints (economic, environmental, social, political, health, safety, manufacturability, and sustainability).
that relate to your chosen primary source. Write of each source and explain how it connects to and informs your topic.

As you can tell, all the assignments have both critical reading and writing components. You have to read a lot (e.g., “Use at least 5 current Economics research articles,” “refer to 2 other documents,” and “Select 4-5 secondary sources”) and critically before you form your own opinions and then start to write. Sometimes reading is for ideas and evidence (i.e., reasons, examples, and information from sources), and other times reading is to provide an evaluation of information accuracy (e.g., research designs, statistics). Without critical thinking and reading, critical writing will have no ground. Critical thinking and reading are the prerequisites for critical writing. A clear definition of critical writing is provided below.

What is Critical Writing?

Critical writing is writing which analyses and evaluates information, usually from multiple sources, in order to develop an argument. A mistake many beginning writers make is to assume that everything they read is true and that they should agree with it, since it has been published in an academic text or journal. Being part of the academic community, however, means that you should be critical of (i.e. question) what you read, looking for reasons why it should be accepted or rejected, for example by comparing it with what other writers say about the topic, or evaluating the research methods to see if they are adequate or whether they could be improved.

If you are used to accepting the ideas and opinions stated in a text, you have to relearn how to be critical in evaluating the reliability of the sources, particularly in the online space as a large amount of online information is not screened. In addition, critical writing is different from the types of writing (e.g., descriptive writing) you might have practiced in primary and secondary education.

The following table gives some examples to show the difference between descriptive and critical writing (adapted from the website ). Pay attention to the different verbs used in the Table for the comparisons.

You might feel familiar with the verbs used in the column describing critical writing. If you still remember, those words are also used to depict the characteristics of critical thinking and reading.

ACTIVITY #1:

Read the two writing samples, identify which one is descriptive writing and which one is critical writing, and explain your judgment.

Sample 1: Recently, President Jacob Zuma made the decision to reshuffle the parliamentary cabinet, including the firing of finance minister, Pravin Gordhan. This decision was not well received by many South Africans.

Sample 2: President Zuma’s firing of popular finance minister, Gordhan drastically impacted investor confidence. This led to a sharp decrease in the value of the Rand. Such devaluation means that all USD-based imports (including petrol) will rise in cost, thereby raising the cost of living for South Africans, and reducing disposable income. This puts both cost and price pressure on Organisation X as an importer of USD-based goods Y, requiring it to consider doing Z. Furthermore, political instability has the added impact of encouraging immigration, particularly amongst skilled workers whose expertise is valued abroad (brain drain).

Further, to write critically, you also have to pay attention to the rhetorical and logical aspects of writing:

Writing critically involves:

  • Providing appropriate and sufficient arguments and examples
  • Choosing terms that are precise, appropriate, and persuasive
  • Making clear the transitions from one thought to another to ensure the overall logic of the presentation
  • Editing for content, structure, and language

An increased awareness of the impact of choices of content, language, and structure can help you as a writer to develop habits of rewriting and revision.

Regarding the content, when writing critically, you cannot just rely on your own ideas, experiences, and/or one source. You have to read a wide range of sources on the specific topic you are exploring to get a holistic picture of what others have discussed on the topic, from which you further make your own judgment. Through reading other sources, you not only form your own judgment and opinions but also collect evidence to support your arguments. Evidence is so important in critical writing. In addition to the collection of evidence, you also need to use different ways (e.g., quoting, paraphrasing, and synthesizing) to integrate the evidence into your writing to increase your critical analysis.

Using quotes is always an issue. Some students like to quote a lot and/or too long throughout their papers, and others do not know why they quote. Remember that when you use direct quotations, you are using others’ ideas, not yours. You should limit the use of quotes to the minimum because readers are always interested in your opinions. In other words, you need to use quotes critically.

When you quote directly from a source, use the quotation critically. This means that you should not substitute the quotation for your own articulation of a point. Rather, introduce the quotation by laying out the judgments you are making about it, and the reasons why you are using it. Often a quotation is followed by some further analysis.

Barna (2017) stated that “A good rule of thumb is that the evidence should only be about 5-10% of the piece.” Further, according to the EAP Foundation.org , you need to avoid doing a laundry list in critical writing:

You cannot just string quotes together (A says this, B says that, C says something else), without looking more deeply at the information and building on it to support your own argument.

This means you need to break down the information from other sources to determine how the parts relate to one another or to an overall structure or purpose [analysing], and then make judgements about it, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, and possibly ‘grey areas’ in between, which are neither strengths nor weaknesses [evaluating]. Critical reading skills will help you with this, as you consider whether the source is reliable, relevant, up-to-date, and accurate.

When and Why do you quote?

When should you use quotes?

Using quotations is the easiest way to include source material, but quotations should be used carefully and sparingly. While paraphrasing and summarizing provide the opportunity to show your understanding of the source material, quoting may only show your ability to type it.

Having said that, there are a few very good reasons that you might want to use a quote rather than a paraphrase or summary:

  • Accuracy: You are unable to paraphrase or summarize the source material without changing the author’s intent.
  • Authority: You may want to use a quote to lend expert authority for your assertion or to provide source material for analysis.
  • Conciseness: Your attempts to paraphrase or summarize are awkward or much longer than the source material.
  • Unforgettable language: You believe that the words of the author are memorable or remarkable because of their effectiveness or historical flavor. Additionally, the author may have used a unique phrase or sentence, and you want to comment on words or phrases themselves.

When you decide to quote, be careful of relying too much upon one source or quoting too much of a source and make sure that your use of the quote demonstrates an understanding of the source material. Essentially, you want to avoid having a paper that is a string of quotes with occasional input from you.

How do you quote?

  • With a complete sentence
  • With “according to”
  • With a reporting verb
  • With a “that” clause
  • As part of your sentence

Citing the islands of Fiji as a case in point, Bordo notes that “until television was introduced in 1995, the islands had no reported cases of eating disorders. In 1998, three years after programs from the United States and Britain began broadcasting there, 62 percent of the girls surveyed reported dieting” (149-50). Bordo’s point is that the Western cult of dieting is spreading even to remote places across the globe.

The firm belief which has been widely advertised is that “international students should be given equal rights and respect while studying abroad” (Lane, 2020, p. 19).

Smith, an agent working at an international company, put forward the seriousness of economic recession brought by the COVID-19 pandemic: “our economy will soon collapse, followed by business failures, elevated unemployment, and social turbulence ” (2021, p. 87).

Dominguez (2002) suggested, “teachers should reflect on their teaching constantly and proactively” to avoid teacher burnout and attrition (pp. 76-79).

According to the IEP student manual, “To study in the IEP you must be 18 years old and your English level must be ‘high beginner’ or higher” (p. 6).

Now move on to the language aspect of critical writing, you should pay attention to the analytical verbs used in critical writing.

Analytical verbs are verbs that indicate critical thinking. They’re used in essays to dissect a text and make interpretive points, helping you to form a strong argument and remain analytical. If you don’t use analytical verbs, you may find yourself simply repeating plot points, and describing a text, rather than evaluating and exploring core themes and ideas.

The use of analytical verbs is also important to show your precision and appropriateness in language use. For example, instead of using says and talks, replace those verbs with states, discusses, or claims. Not only does it enhance the formality of the language, but also it helps to create the tone of writing. This further means that you have to understand the specific meaning, purpose, and function of each verb in a specific context as shown in the table below.

The verbs listed under each category are NOT synonyms and are different based on context. Please ensure that the selected verb conveys your intended meaning.

The accuracy of language use that is important for critical writing is also reflected in the use of hedges .

Hedging is the use of linguistic devices to express hesitation or uncertainty as well as to demonstrate politeness and indirectness.

People use hedged language for several different purposes but perhaps the most fundamental are the following:

  • to minimize the possibility of another academic opposing the claims that are being made
  • to conform to the currently accepted style of academic writing
  • to enable the author to devise a politeness strategy where they are able to acknowledge that there may be flaws in their claims

There are different types of hedges used in writing to make your claim less certain but more convincing. For example, what is the difference between the two sentences as shown below?

Artificial Intelligence: An Irreplaceable Assistant in Policy-making

Do you understand artificial intelligence (AI)? Are you excited that humans can create these machines that think like us? Do you ever worry that they develop too advanced to replace humans? If you have thought about these questions, you are already in the debate of the century. AI is a term used to describe machine artifacts with digital algorithms that have the ability to perceive contexts for action and the capacity to associate contexts to actions (Bryson & Winfield, 2017). The 21st century has witnessed a great number of changes in AI. As AI shows its great abilities in decision-making, humans are relying more on AI to make policies. Despite some concerns about the overuse of AI, AI is no longer to be replaced in policy-making because it has the capabilities that humans cannot achieve, such as transparent decision-making and powerful data processing.

AI has the capacity to use algorithms or systems to make the decision-making process more transparent (Walport & Sedwill, 2016). Many decisions made by humans are based upon their intuition rather than the direct result of the deliberate collection and processing of information (Dane et al., 2012). Intuition is useful in business when considering the outcome of an investment or a new product. However, in politics, the public would often question whether the policy is biased, so a transparent decision-making process should be used instead of intuition. AI can make political decisions more transparent by visualizing digital records (Calo, 2017). AI can make decisions without any discrimination and can have the public better understand of the policies.

In addition, AI can process a large amount of information at a speed faster than the cognitive ability of the most intelligent human policymakers (Jarrahi, 2018). A qualified policy must be based on facts reflected by data, so researching data is an essential part of policy-making. There are two main challenges for the human decision-makers in this area: (1) The amount of data is too large and (2) the relationship between data is too complex. Handling these two problems is where AI is superior. The high computing power of AI makes it an effective tool for retrieving and analyzing large amounts of data, thus reducing the complexity of the logic between problems (Jarrahi, 2018). Without AI, the policymakers would be overwhelmed by tons of data in this modern information age. It is almost impossible for them to convert those data into useful information. For example, data provided to the politician who is responsible for health care is mostly from the electronic health record (HER). HER is just the digital record transported from paper-based forms (Bennett et al., 2012). AI can analyze the data to generate clinical assessments, symptoms, and patient behavior and then link that information with social factors such as education level and economic status. According to the information from AI, the policy maker can make policies for healthcare improvement (Bennett et al., 2012). With the assistance of AI, the government can not only collect data easier but also utilize those data as operable Information.

However, while AI shows its great abilities in policy-making, it also brings considerable risks to contemporary society, and the most significant one is privacy. The only source for AI systems to learn human behavior is data, so AI needs to collect enormous quantities of information about users in order to perform better. Some scholars claim that the main problem with AI data collection is the use of data for unintended purposes. The data is likely to be processed, used, or even sold without the users’ permission (Bartneck et al, 2021). The 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal showed how private data collected through Facebook can be used to manipulate elections (Bartneck et al, 2021). While privacy is a crucial problem, this is a handleable problem and we cannot deny the benefits brought by using AI. The most appropriate way to solve this problem is to establish a complete regulatory system. In fact, many policies have been made to protect user privacy in AI data collection. One of safeguard in this area is to restrict the centralized processing of data. Researchers are also conducting a lot of research in this area and have achieved some technological breakthroughs. For example, open-source code and open data formats will allow a more transparent distinction between private and transferable information, blockchain-based technologies will allow data to be reviewed and tracked, and “smart contracts” will provide transparent control over how data is used without the need for centralized authority (Yuste & Goering, 2017).

In conclusion, although there may be some privacy-related issues with AI policies, the powerful data collection capabilities and transparent decision-making process of AI will bring many benefits to humans. In the future, AI is more likely to continue to serve as an assistant to humans when making policies under a complete and strict regulatory system.

Apart from the overall structure of critical writing, it is also important to pay attention to the paragraph-level structure. There are different paragraph models for critical writing.

Model 1: TED model for writing critical paragraphs

Often in assignments, you are expected to critically evaluate – this means to assess the relevance and significance of concepts relating to a specific topic or assignment question. Introduce your point. Give examples from reading. Is there support for your argument or can you identify weaknesses? Are there different perspectives to compare and contrast? Build your explanation and create your objective, reasoned argument (case or thesis) based on the evaluation from different perspectives. You will include your conclusion and point of view, communicating your stance, having made a judgment on research you have found and its significance in contributing to answering your assignment question.

Use the TED model to integrate critical thinking into your writing:

Topic Make your point clearly introducing the main topic of your paragraph.
Evidence Give examples from critical reading and sources that support your argument.
Discussion Explain the significance of your evidence and how it links to the topic of your essay.

Each example of evidence in your writing should have a clear purpose or function. Be explicit and tell the reader what it contributes to your reasoning.

Professional practice is more complex than simply applying theory to practice, since it involves a professional juggling of situational demands, intuition, experiences and knowledge (Schön, 1991). Practitioners do not apply research findings in a simple deductive process; they need time to think, translate and relate the research findings to their particular setting. The extent to which a given piece of evidence is utilised by an individual in practice depends on their sense of the situation and this inevitably involves professional judgement.

Model 2: WEED model for writing critical paragraphs

This is a model for writing critical paragraphs. It’s taken from Godwin’s book called ‘Planning your Essay’. Each paragraph should be on a single topic, making a single point. A paragraph is usually around a third of a page.

W is for What

You should begin your paragraph with the topic or point that you’re making so that it’s clear to your lecturer. Everything in the paragraph should fit in with this opening sentence.

E is for Evidence

The middle of your paragraph should be full of evidence – this is where all your references should be incorporated. Make sure that your evidence fits in with your topic.

E is for Examples

Sometimes it’s useful to expand on your evidence. If you’re talking about a case study, the example might be how your point relates to the particular scenario being discussed.

D is for Do

You should conclude your paragraph with the implications of your discussion. This gives you the opportunity to add your commentary, which is very important in assignments that require you to use critical analysis. So, in effect, each paragraph is like a mini-essay, with an introduction, main body, and conclusion.

Example: a good critical paragraph

Exposure to nature and green spaces has been found to increase health, happiness, and wellbeing. Whilst trees and greenery improve air quality by reducing air pollutants, green spaces facilitate physical activity, reduce stress, and provide opportunities for social interaction (Kaplan, 1995; Lachowycz,and Jones, 2011; Ward Thompson et al., 2012; Hartig et al., 2014; Anderson et al., 2016). Older adults have described increased feelings of wellbeing while spending time in green spaces and walking past street greenery (Finaly et al., 2015; Orr et al., 2016). They are more likely to walk on streets which are aesthetically pleasing (Lockett, Willis and Edwards, 2005) while greenery such as flowers and trees play an important role in improving the aesthetics of the environment (Day, 2008). Therefore, greater integration of urban green spaces and street greenery in cities may have the potential to increase physical activity and wellbeing in older adults.

Please identify the paragraph-level components in the following paragraphs. You can use different colors to indicate different components.

Social Media plays a key role in slowing the spread of vaccine misinformation. According to Nikos-Rose (2021) from the University of California, individuals’ attitudes towards vaccination can negatively be influenced by social media. They can simply post a piece of misleading information to the public, and the deceived ones will share it with their families and friends. The role of media can also help boost the public’s confidence in the vaccination. The media can provide valuable information for the public to know that the vaccine is safe. Almost everyone in the modern era lives with a cell phone now. People on social media can also share their experiences after getting vaccinated. Influences can help boost the public’s confidence. Just as voters would receive “I voted” after casting their ballots, vaccination distribution sites can provide “I got vaccinated” stickers. This can encourage individuals to post on the media that they have received the vaccine (Milkman, 2020). Furthermore, those who spread misleading information should be fined by the authorities. This punishment would be sufficient for them to learn their lesson. People who oversee data and information in social media should be concerned about the spread of misleading information on social media. After deleting the false information, they should put up a notice stating that is fake. This will help the public to understand which information should be trusted or not. Moreover, people who find misleading information online should report it to the administration. This could help prevent false info from circulating on the internet.

Recent studies showed that the contamination of land and water can also negatively affect the production of crops and the food systems as the safety of products can be compromised by the chemicals used by fracking. In addition, the amount of freshwater required for the mixture of the fracking fluids can generate a lack of water supply to the local agricultural industries. The fresh water is the 90-97 % of the fracking fluids, and the water deployed is not possible to recycle efficiently. In fact, the wastewater became a further challenge to the agricultural sector as it can make the soil dry and unusable for crops (Pothukuchi et al. 2018). The challenges faced by the agricultural sector are reflected in the farmlands and livestocks as well. For example, in Pennsylvania, the Dairy farming is one of the major agricultural sectors. This particular sector requires unpolluted water and pasturelands to enable the cows to produce milk. Since 1996 this sector began to fail, but the largest decrease in cows that produce milk took place between 2007 and 2011. It was the exact same period when the fracking industries reached their peak in this area (Pothukuchi et al. 2018). Another piece of evidence is related to the air pollution caused by fracking, specifically, the pollution of agricultural pollinators such as bees. The population of air caused by fracking has led to a huge degradation of that volatiles endangering the local and global food production. Those outcomes are closely related to the low level of planning abilities in rural areas, where fracking usually takes place. Particularly, the gap between fracking industry actors and local officials didn’t allow the development of a proper level of policies and regulations.

They have things to say about the language used, the structure, or the form. Yet they can struggle to put these ideas to paper.

I avoid using sentence frames for literature essay writing whenever I can. They are hugely restrictive and it is boring to mark a whole set of essays that read the same.

One way to improve how close analysis is written up is to focus on the verbs of analysis. I have these 20 posters up in my classroom and I refer to them frequently. I also have them printed in a small task card size so students can have them on their desks.

These verbs not only help students focus their thinking and ideas, but also allow them to bring some variety to their analytical writing. We are avoiding the overuse of ‘this suggests’ and ‘this implies’!

A Guide to Essay Writing

Jess completed Year 12 in Queensland. Note that specific requirements or expectations for essay-writing in other states and in other exams may differ. Always consult the syllabus requirements for your state and subject.

External exams are approaching, and you’ll likely be preparing to write an essay for English. No matter which text you’re studying for your exam, the art of writing an essay is the same.

In this article, I provide a guide to the features of essay writing. I have included steps and examples of how to write an introduction, body paragraph and conclusion to help you ace your English exam.

Features of Essays

Thesis statement.

A thesis statement is typically the last sentence of your introduction. It outlines the main point that you are trying to prove in your essay. All of your body paragraphs should support the claim you make in your thesis statement.

Depending on the essay question, sometimes you will have to take a position on a topic. This means you have to decide which way to argue, as you would in a persuasive speech. A key phrase used in these essay questions is often, “to what extent…?” Here are some examples from recent external English exams:

Macbeth : Insecurity shapes Macbeth’s reign as king. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Hamlet : To what extent are Ophelia’s deterioration and death significant in the play?

Other times, the essay question will indicate what you must prove, so you do not have to make a decision about which way to argue; however, you still must provide your own evidence and analysis to prove the point. Here are some examples from recent external English exams:

Burial Rites : Analyse how the representation of Agnes’s relationship with the farming family in Kornsá is significant in Burial Rites .

Hamlet : Analyse how the concept of guilt is significant in Hamlet .

Your essay has very little authority without quotes. Going into an essay exam without knowing any quotes is like going into a courtroom without any evidence. You must integrate relevant quotes into your body paragraphs to support your arguments and demonstrate your knowledge.

To make sure your quotes are relevant, research them as part of your exam preparation. You shouldn’t choose the quotes you’re going to memorise without fully understanding each quote. Conducting research will help you to avoid using quotes that are irrelevant or interpreting the quotes incorrectly.

So, how many quotes do you need in each body paragraph? I would aim for a minimum of two, but my preference is to include three quotes per paragraph. Keep in mind that your quotes don’t have to be long; they can be one, two or three words. In saying this, your quotes can be one to two full sentences.

If your quotes don’t quite fit the structure of your sentence, you can use ellipses (…) and square brackets to solve this. Use an ellipsis in place of any words you have removed from a quote. Use square brackets to add words or letters that are needed to ensure the quote makes sense in the sentence.

Analysis and Analytical Verbs

If you have quotes to support your points, then you are off to a great start, but essays require analysis too. You can’t just include a quote and say that it supports your argument – you must analyse the quotes to show how or why they support your argument.

The key to doing this is using analytical verbs. Analytical verbs are verbs that show you are thinking critically about the topic. You use them to make interpretive points to help to support your arguments. Here is a word bank of some strong analytical verbs:

Concluding and Linking Sentence

It is important to write a concluding and linking sentence at the end of your body paragraphs to sum up the paragraph and cohesively transition to the next paragraph.

Example Concluding and Linking Sentence:

While Lady Macbeth’s aversion to femininity alludes to her antagonistic character, her role in King Duncan’s regicide, and her behaviour in the immediate aftermath, expose the full extent of her evilness. 

In the above example, the first 11 words conclude the paragraph, and the last 20 words link to the next paragraph. The topic sentence of the following paragraph then flows on from this, taking the topic of Lady Macbeth’s involvement in King Duncan’s regicide and elaborating on it:  

Lady Macbeth’s persuasion of Macbeth to commit regicide confirms her villainous spirit.

Example Essay Question

The examples I have provided below are part of an essay I wrote in a Year 12 practice exam in response to the following question:

Malcolm describes Lady Macbeth as evil or a ‘fiend-like queen.’ To what extent do you agree with Malcolm’s assessment of her character? Justify your position.

How to Write an Introduction

Your introduction should introduce the text and author, the overall essay question, your three arguments and your overarching essay claim. It should do this in such a way that the reader does not need to know the exact question you are responding to because this should be clear in your wording.

Here is a general introduction structure:

Introduce the name of the text and the author and mention the general topic of the essay.

Outline your three body paragraph topics. You may do this in one, two or three sentences. My preference is to write three sentences to separate my three points.

Write your thesis statement.

Example Introduction:

In Shakespeare’s Macbeth , characters regularly defy their gender expectations and contest the patriarchal system of the 11th Century, in which the play was based. Lady Macbeth is the most prominent example of this, with her rejecting her femininity in favour of the masculine qualities necessary to commit evil deeds. Her implication in King Duncan’s regicide, from arranging how it was to be executed to her lack of remorse following its completion, clearly demonstrates her ‘fiend-like queen’ nature. However, as she becomes excluded from Macbeth’s wicked plans, her femininity, remorse and lack of evil is revealed. Lady Macbeth is arguably conveyed as an evil character, though her womanly features do make an appearance. 

How to Write a Body Paragraph

Your body paragraphs should clearly link to your introduction. The three points or arguments you outlined in your introduction should then form your three body paragraphs. I like to do this in chronological order – the first point I mentioned in my introduction will be the topic of my first body paragraph, and so on.

Here is a general body paragraph structure:

Topic sentence

Elaboration on the topic sentence

First quote with some context around the quote

Analysis of the first quote

Second quote with some context around the quote

Analysis of the second quote

Third quote with some context around the quote

Analysis of the third quote

Concluding and linking sentence  

Your body paragraphs will likely be about 250 words long.

Example Body Paragraph:

" Lady Macbeth’s rejection of her gender is a prime example of her evilness, particularly considering masculine women’s association with witches during the Elizabethan era. While women were expected to be submissive and gentle and give birth to children, Lady Macbeth was starkly the opposite. Upon hearing word from Macbeth regarding the witches’ prophecy that he would be King of Scotland, she proclaims, “ Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty.” This accentuates Lady Macbeth’s desire for her femininity to be removed to allow her to embody the stereotypical masculine figure capable of choreographing regicide, exhibiting her dark personality. Shakespeare’s decision for Lady Macbeth to immediately revert to a murderous route rather than displaying feminine-like patience also highlights his intention to portray her as villainous. Lady Macbeth’s “unsex me here” invocation also signifies her connection to the witches as she refers to supernatural spirits. The witches are portrayed as androgynous characters in both their appearance and dark mental traits, and Lady Macbeth’s evil intentions and non-conformance with accepted gender roles emphasises her likeness to them. In addition, both Lady Macbeth and the witches do not have children. In fact, Lady Macbeth vowed that she would have “dash[ed] the brains out” of her own child should she have sworn to do so, reinforcing her wickedness. While Lady Macbeth’s aversion to femininity alludes to her antagonistic character, her role in King Duncan’s regicide, and her behaviour in the immediate aftermath, expose the full extent of her evilness."

How to Write a Conclusion

Your conclusion should clearly link back to your thesis statement and sum up your three body paragraphs.

Example Conclusion:

While Lady Macbeth reverts to a more feminine role by the play’s conclusion, her immediate belief that murder was an acceptable solution to her and Macbeth’s dilemma, coupled with her connection to witchcraft and removal of her gender in favour of masculine qualities, solidifies her evil depiction. Shakespeare utilises her demise as an instrument to reinforce that non-conformance and evil have repercussions. Overall, Malcom’s description of Lady Macbeth as a “fiend-like queen” is an accurate assessment of her unnatural character.

There are a lot of steps involved in preparing for an external English exam. Don’t neglect to learn how to write a good essay in your haste to study your given text.

How many quotes should I include in each body paragraph of my essay?

While there's no fixed rule, it's generally recommended to aim for a minimum of two quotes per paragraph. However, including three quotes per paragraph is often preferred for depth and variety. Remember, the length of the quotes can vary, from one word to a couple of sentences. The key is to ensure they are relevant and effectively support your arguments.

Analytical verbs are essential for demonstrating critical thinking in your essay. Some strong analytical verbs you can use include "suggests," "emphasises," "portrays," "illustrates," "demonstrates," "implies," "conveys," and "signifies," among others. These verbs help you interpret the significance of the quotes and how they contribute to your overall argument.

How should I structure my body paragraphs to ensure coherence and clarity?

A well-structured body paragraph typically starts with a topic sentence that introduces the main point of the paragraph. This is followed by elaboration on the topic sentence, including relevant quotes with context, and analysis of each quote. This can be repeated a few times. The body paragraph should end with a linking sentence that summarizes the paragraph and transitions to the next one. This structure helps maintain coherence and clarity throughout your essay.

How can I balance memorizing quotes with understanding their relevance and interpretation?

While it's important to have a repertoire of quotes for your essay, it's equally essential to understand their context and relevance to your arguments. Prioritize quality over quantity when selecting quotes and ensure you can interpret and analyse them effectively. Conduct thorough research and engage with the text to grasp the deeper meaning behind each quote, rather than simply memorizing them without comprehension.

An analytical paragraph is a paragraph that gives an in-depth analysis of a certain topic. It helps readers make sense of a complex issue and can be written on any subject, including films , music, historical events, philosophy, etc. The peculiarity of an analytical paragraph is that it not only presents information but also analyzes it, that is, explains its components, evaluates its significance, and draws conclusions using specific words and phrases.

Generally, an analytical paragraph contains four sections: a topic sentence, evidence, analysis, and a closing sentence. Below, we’ve listed phrases you can use in each part.

Needless to say, the English language is richer and more flexible than this list. Try to find new word combinations and uncommon usages. However, don’t overplay – it’s still academic writing that requires certain formalities.

Oil and Gas Companies Are Trying to Rig the Marketplace

Many of us focused on the problem of climate change have been waiting for the day when renewable energy would become cheaper than fossil fuels.

Well, we’re there: Solar and wind power are less expensive than oil, gas and coal in many places and are saving our economy billions of dollars . These and other renewable energy sources produced 30 percent of the world’s electricity in 2023, which may also have been the year that greenhouse gas emissions in the power sector peaked. In the United States alone, the amount of solar and wind energy capacity waiting to be built and connected to the grid is 18 times the amount of natural gas power capacity in the queue.

So you might reasonably conclude that the market is pivoting, and the end for fossil fuels is near.

But it’s not. Instead, fossil fuel interests — including think tanks, trade associations and dark money groups — are often preventing the market from shifting to the lowest cost energy.

Similar to other industries from tobacco to banking to pharmaceuticals, oil and gas interests use tactics like lobbying and manufacturing “grass-roots” support to maximize profits. They also spread misinformation: It’s well documented that fossil fuel interests tried to convince the public that their products didn’t cause climate change, in the same way that Big Tobacco tried to convince the public that its products didn’t harm people’s health.

But as renewables have become a more formidable competitor, we are now seeing something different: a large-scale effort to deceive the public into thinking that the alternative products are harmful, unreliable and worse for consumers. And as renewables continue to drop in cost, it will become even more critical for policymakers and others to challenge these attempts to slow the adoption of cheaper and healthier forms of energy.

One technique the industry and its allies have used is to spread falsehoods — for example, that offshore wind turbines kill whales or that renewable energy is prohibitively expensive — to stop projects from getting built. What appear to be ordinary concerned citizens or groups making good-faith arguments about renewable energy are actually a well-funded effort to disseminate a lie. Researchers at Brown University have revealed a complex web of fossil fuel interests, climate-denial think tanks and community groups that are behind opposition to wind farms off New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Opinion Don’t call Trump a ‘felon’

The word fell out of favor in media for good reason.

Carroll Bogert is president of the Marshall Project , a nonprofit publication dedicated to covering criminal justice.

Since Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felonies last week, gleeful headlines have sprouted across the media, with a new descriptor for the former president: “felon.”

The New York Times editorial board condemned him under the pithy banner : “Donald Trump, Felon.”

This newspaper ran an analysis by senior political reporter Aaron Blake headlined : “Trump is a felon. Here’s why that could matter in the 2024 race.”

Even the New York Post, which ran a sympathetic one-liner on its front page, “ Injustice ,” included a subhead calling him the “first felon president.”

Trump has delayed and avoided judicial proceedings for much of his career. Surely part of the impetus behind the sudden widespread use of the word “felon” is to take Trump down a peg, to label him as no better than a common criminal. And that is the problem.

Most people in prisons and jails in America come from lives of poverty and discrimination. A label such as “felon” or “inmate” contributes to keeping them at the margins of society.

I’m the president of the Marshall Project , a nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to covering criminal justice in the United States. The new edition of the Associated Press’s influential stylebook , coincidentally released the day before Trump’s conviction, states clearly, “Do not use felon, convict, or ex-con as nouns.” Instead, the stylebook advises journalists, “when possible, [to] use person-first language to describe someone who is incarcerated or someone in prison.” The stylebook included a criminal justice chapter for which the Marshall Project was consulted.

Labels marginalize people. They turn a moving verb into a fixed noun. They dehumanize and subjugate. As my colleague Lawrence Bartley wrote in a moving essay, “ I Am Not Your ‘Inmate ,’” that term fell on his ears like the n-word.

“Person-first” language is a concept borrowed from the disability rights movement. We should use it as best we can, but in the beautifully clear words of the editor overseeing our guidance on word choice , Akiba Solomon, “journalism is a discipline of clarity.” Journalists shouldn’t use jargon. People need to understand what the heck we’re writing about.

At the same time, language can and should change.

Trump does not come from the margins of society. He is wealthy and powerful and was convicted of 34 felonies. Why should the media treat him with the same care it’s beginning to show toward other people convicted of felonies?

By calling Trump a “felon,” we risk rehabilitating a word that has fallen out of favor for good reason.

Trump is a person convicted of felonies. So are millions of other Americans. How we describe him affects them, too.
