Essay on Mobile Phones: 400 Words

When telephone was first introduced in the world in the 1950s, people were keenly interested in it. As an easier way of communication, telephone has its own merit. Of late, the introduction of mobiles makes an easy access to communication. It is in fact inevitable in the present day of hurry and business. People have warmly accepted mobiles as the blessing of science. There is little doubt that without the use of mobiles none is nowadays able to lead one’s life quite normally. One is capable of communicating with people, staying far away very quickly. Thus many a problem can be well- solved by way of using these mobiles.

But everything has its merit and demerit. As science is a bane as well as a boon, mobiles are to some extent to be cursed. People, especially the young generation, have been abusing mobiles. They not only chat in an unexpected way but also indulge themselves in leading immoral life by abusing mobiles. Apart from this, several mercenary companies exploit the advantage of mobiles to meet their selfish ends. They do business through mobiles. As a result, young people have been misguided. To use mobiles is for them to be up to date. They avail themselves of the opportunity of the internet connection in their mobiles and do whatever they like to do. Obscene video clippings and some other versions of immoral entertainment are now available in mobiles. Therefore, the students have now tremendous fascination for the mobiles. Consequently, instead of studying, concentrate on using mobiles for sheer fun.

Another demerit is that because of the excessive use of the mobiles different companies plunge themselves into doing profitable business. Consequently, numerous towers have been erected for the network of mobiles. It is well known that a particular wave which is responsible for the mobile network does harm to the ecological balance of the environment. It is evident in the pale colors of the trees and fruits adjacent to the mobile towers.

Thus, it is the time to be conscious of the abuse of the mobiles. The concerned authority should take immediate steps to stop immoral business which is proliferating in abusing mobiles. All should remember that the sole purpose of mobile is to communicate. Entertainment may be available in the network of mobiles. But there should be no immoral design. Above all, the government should restrict the use of mobiles, so much so that anti-social activities may not be done through mobiles.

Essay about Smartphone Addiction:

Smartphone addiction has become a common problem in today’s society. With the advancement of technology, smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. We use them for communication, entertainment, and even as a tool for work.

However, this constant presence of smartphones has led to an increase in addiction among individuals. In this essay, we will explore the causes and consequences of smartphone addiction.

One of the main causes of smartphone addiction is the need for constant stimulation. We have become accustomed to receiving instant gratification from our smartphones in the form of notifications, likes, and messages.

This constant flow of information and entertainment can be addictive, making it difficult for individuals to detach themselves from their devices. As a result, individuals spend excessive amounts of time on their smartphones, leading to neglecting other important aspects of their lives such as relationships and responsibilities.

Another factor that contributes to smartphone addiction is the fear of missing out (FOMO). Social media platforms have created a culture where individuals feel the need to constantly check for updates and stay connected with others. This fear of being left out can lead to addictive behavior, causing individuals to constantly be on their phones even when it is not necessary. Moreover, the endless scrolling and comparing oneself with others on social media can have negative effects on one’s self-esteem and mental health.

The consequences of smartphone addiction can be detrimental. It affects our physical and mental well-being as we spend long hours hunched over our screens, leading to posture problems and eye strain.

Moreover, excessive use of smartphones has been linked to sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and even decreased productivity. Additionally, smartphone addiction can also lead to financial issues as individuals may overspend on in-app purchases or data plans.

In conclusion, smartphone addiction is a growing concern in today’s society with various causes and consequences. It is important for individuals to recognize their usage patterns and take necessary steps to limit their screen time.

Setting boundaries and finding alternative forms of leisure can help combat the negative effects of smartphone addiction. It is crucial to find a balance and not let our smartphones control our lives. So, we should use it as a tool for convenience rather than letting it consume us completely.

Argumentative Essay about Smartphone Addiction:

Smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. With their ever-increasing features and capabilities, it’s no surprise that people have become increasingly dependent on them. However, this dependence can turn into an addiction – a condition that is becoming more prevalent in today’s society.

Smartphone addiction is a growing concern and it’s important to understand its causes, consequences, and solutions.

One major cause of smartphone addiction is the need for constant connectivity. Smartphones have made it incredibly easy to stay connected with others at all times through social media platforms, messaging apps and emails.

This constant connectivity has blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, making it difficult for individuals to disconnect from their devices. As a result, people feel anxious and restless when they are unable to check their phones. This leads to a cycle of constantly checking for notifications and messages, causing addiction.

The consequences of smartphone addiction are numerous. The excessive use of smartphones can lead to physical health problems such as eye strain, neck and back pain, and disrupted sleep patterns.

Additionally, constant scrolling through social media feeds can cause feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem as individuals compare their lives to the seemingly perfect lives portrayed on social media.

Moreover, smartphone addiction can also negatively impact personal relationships as individuals become more engrossed in their virtual world than the real world.

To combat smartphone addiction, individuals need to take proactive measures such as limiting screen time, practicing mindfulness and setting boundaries with their devices. It’s important for people to be aware of their smartphone usage patterns and make a conscious effort to disconnect from their phones during certain times of the day.

Furthermore, finding alternative activities that can provide a sense of fulfillment and relaxation, such as reading or exercising, can help reduce dependence on smartphones.

Overall, it’s essential for individuals to recognize the signs of smartphone addiction and take steps to maintain a healthy balance between technology and their daily lives.

In conclusion, while smartphones have undoubtedly improved our lives in many ways, we must also acknowledge the potential damage they can cause if not used in moderation. By understanding the causes, consequences and solutions of smartphone addiction, we can make informed decisions on how to use technology in a responsible and healthy manner.

Disadvantages of Smartphone Essay:

There are several disadvantages of using smartphones that we should be aware of. In this section, we will discuss some of the most common and concerning drawbacks associated with smartphone usage.

Firstly, one of the biggest problems with smartphones is addiction. With constant access to social media, games, and other forms of entertainment, it is easy to become glued to our phones all day long. This can lead to a decrease in productivity and overall well-being. Many people also experience anxiety and stress if they are separated from their smartphones for an extended period of time.

Another major disadvantage is the impact on our social interactions. With the rise of smartphones, face-to-face communication has decreased significantly. People often spend more time on their phones than engaging in conversations with those around them. This can lead to a decline in interpersonal skills and meaningful relationships.

Moreover, the excessive use of smartphones has also been linked to various health issues. Constantly staring at a screen can strain our eyes and cause headaches. The blue light emitted from phones can disrupt our sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and other related problems.

The constant use of smartphones can also contribute to sedentary behavior, leading to a more inactive lifestyle and potential health issues such as obesity.

Lastly, the constant need for upgrading to the latest smartphone models can also be a financial burden. Smartphones are expensive devices and constantly buying new ones can put a strain on our budgets. This pressure to keep up with the latest technology can also lead to feelings of inadequacy or inferiority if we cannot afford the newest models.

In conclusion, while smartphones offer numerous benefits and convenience, it is important to be aware of their disadvantages as well. It is essential to find a balance in our smartphone usage and not let them take over our lives completely. Limiting screen time, engaging in face-to-face interactions, and taking breaks from technology can help mitigate these drawbacks and promote a healthier relationship with our smartphones.

Smartphones in School Essay:

Smartphones have become a ubiquitous part of modern society, and their impact can be seen in all areas of our lives. This includes the education system, where smartphones have started to make their way into classrooms.

While some see this as a positive development, others argue that smartphones should not be allowed in schools. In this essay, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of allowing smartphones in schools.

On one hand, smartphones can be a great educational tool. Students have access to a vast amount of information at their fingertips, which allows them to conduct research quickly and efficiently. This can enhance their learning experience and help them stay up-to-date with current events.

Furthermore, smartphones can also come equipped with various educational apps that can make learning more engaging and interactive. These apps can be tailored to fit the needs of individual students, making learning more personalized.

However, there are also valid concerns about allowing smartphones in schools. One major concern is that smartphones can be a distraction for students. With access to social media and other forms of entertainment, students may find it difficult to focus on their studies. This distraction can have a negative impact on their academic performance and overall productivity.

Moreover, smartphones can also pose a security risk if not monitored properly. Students may use them to cheat on exams or engage in cyberbullying. This can create a negative and unsafe learning environment for students.

In conclusion, the use of smartphones in schools is a controversial topic with valid arguments on both sides. While smartphones can be beneficial in enhancing the learning experience, their potential to distract students and cause security issues cannot be ignored.

It is important for schools to carefully consider their policies regarding smartphone usage and find a balance between utilizing them for educational purposes while also monitoring their usage to avoid any negative consequences.

Some children spend hours every day on smartphones.

Why is this the case?

Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

These days, children are spending more and more hours each day using smartphones. In my opinion, this is a natural consequence of the ubiquity of phones and is a decidedly negative phenomenon.

The main cause of this trend is access to portable devices. Since the introduction of the original iPhone, countless phone manufacturers have imitated Apple’s innovation and virtually every family possesses multiple devices. The owners of these phones are typically over-worked and stressed parents who are often willing to allow their children to use their smartphones to listen to music, watch movies, and keep themselves entertained. In many parts of the world, parents even purchase phones specifically for their children to use. The increased hours children spend on phones is therefore a combination of tremendous access coupled with a natural desire to use them.

The main repercussions from increased smartphone usage among children are negative. Firstly, smartphones have replaced healthier habits. Children raised before the advent of the portable smartphone were more likely to read books, socialize with friends, and take part in outdoor activities. These practices are all far healthier physically, intellectually, and emotionally. Moreover, the usage of phones itself is actively detrimental to normal cognitive development. Many researchers have theorized that the 21st century spike in cases of dissociative anxiety disorders can be directly correlated with the technological age in general and smartphones more specifically.

In conclusion, children use smartphones for hours every day because of their availability and the result of this is a steep decline in healthy lifestyles. As governments cannot restrict such usage, it is the responsibility of parents to effectively regulate screen time for their children.

I hope you’re doing fine. I feel something is wrong with the following sentence.

“Children who raised before the advent of the portable smartphone were more likely to read books, socialize with friends, and take part in outdoor activities.”

The improved version is: “Children (who were) raised before the advent of the portable smartphone were more likely to read books, socialize with friends, and take part in outdoor activities.”

The first and foremost factor to consider when choosing a smartphone is the operating system. There are primarily two dominant operating systems in the smartphone market – Android and iOS. Both operating systems have their own unique features and benefits, and the choice between the two largely depends on one's personal preference and usage. Android is known for its flexibility, customization options, and wide range of device options, while iOS is known for its seamless integration with other Apple devices, superior security, and optimized user experience. It's important to consider which operating system aligns best with one's needs and preferences before making a decision.

Hardware Specifications

Another important factor to consider is the hardware specifications of the smartphone. This includes the processor, RAM, storage capacity, camera quality, and battery life. The performance of a smartphone largely depends on its hardware specifications, and it's important to choose a smartphone that meets one's usage requirements. For instance, if one is a heavy multitasker and uses a lot of resource-intensive apps, a smartphone with a high-performance processor and ample RAM would be ideal. Similarly, if one is a photography enthusiast, a smartphone with a high-quality camera and ample storage capacity would be a priority.

Design and Build Quality

The design and build quality of a smartphone are also important considerations. Some people prefer sleek and slim designs, while others prioritize durability and ruggedness. The choice of design largely depends on one's personal style and usage. Additionally, the size and form factor of the smartphone should also be considered. Some people prefer larger-screen smartphones for media consumption and productivity, while others prefer smaller, more compact smartphones for portability and ease of use.

Display Quality

One cannot overlook the importance of the display quality when choosing a smartphone. The display is the primary interface through which one interacts with the smartphone, and it's important to choose a smartphone with a high-quality display that offers vibrant colors, sharp resolution, and good viewing angles. Additionally, factors such as display type (LCD, OLED, AMOLED), refresh rate, and brightness should also be considered.

Connectivity Options

Connectivity options such as 5G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC are also important considerations when choosing a smartphone. With the advent of 5G technology, having a smartphone that supports 5G connectivity can future-proof one's investment and ensure faster data speeds and lower latency. Additionally, having reliable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity is essential for seamless wireless connectivity with other devices.

Software and Ecosystem

One should also consider the software and ecosystem of the smartphone. This includes the availability of apps, software updates, and customer support. Both Android and iOS have a vast ecosystem of apps, but the availability of certain apps and the user experience may vary between the two platforms. It's important to consider the ecosystem that aligns best with one's needs and preferences.

Lastly, the price of the smartphone is a crucial factor to consider. Smartphones come in a wide range of price points, from budget-friendly options to premium flagship devices. It's important to set a budget and choose a smartphone that offers the best value for money. While premium flagship devices offer the latest and greatest features, budget-friendly options can also offer a compelling set of features at a more affordable price.

Choosing a smartphone is a decision that should be made based on careful consideration of various factors. By considering factors such as operating system, hardware specifications, design, display quality, connectivity options, software ecosystem, and price, one can make an informed decision that best suits one's needs and preferences. Ultimately, the choice of smartphone is a personal one, and it's important to choose a smartphone that aligns with one's lifestyle and usage.

Essay on Mobile Phone Boon or Bane – 400 Words

Mobile phones are a boon as they are used for a number of useful purposes. Nevertheless, there is also no denying the fact that a gadget as useful as a mobile phone could sometime be annoying and irritating.

Boon or Bane

Of course mobile phones are a boon given to the number of useful purposes they are used for like – internet, voice or video chat, documentation etc. Despite from the usual there are other uses like – social media and remain updated about the developments. Today every mobile phone user has a social media account, which he manages from his mobile phone. It helps him/her to remain connected to family and friends as well as other dignitaries like politicians, actors, cricketers etc.

But despite all the advantages, mobile phones could sometimes be annoying too. The use of mobile phones for various purposes and the accessibility of internet have compromised the privacy of the user. Also, every form that we fill today has a mandatory column asking to provide the phone number. Today the number of a common mobile phone user is available with many marketing agencies whose main aim is to sell their product. This loop hole in privacy has led to unwanted and unexpected marketing calls. People get annoying calls from insurance agents, marketing executives, etc, trying to sell their products to the mobile phone user, who is not at all interested.

Next in line is social media. Social media is a place where people share their views, pictures etc with those who are connected. However, this has also compromised the privacy to a certain level as someone undesirable could also peek into your account and send annoying messages; trailing you regularly. Such unwanted social buffs could be really annoying and some people are known to be trailed so regularly using inappropriate and indecent comments that they had to totally shut down their social media account.

In the end it would be more appropriate to say that mobile phones are both a boon and a bane. They are a boon when used appropriately and within limits but could be bane when they are used with mala fide intentions. Even a useful gadget as a mobile phone could be well annoying when it is used with the bad intention of deceiving someone, trailing him/her inappropriately on social media and other accounts.

Nowadays, many individuals have become more and more addicted and dependable on phones, specifically smart call phone s. This often happens without these individuals realizing how the excessive and inappropriate use of their cell phones can create several of problems in their social and everyday lives. Because of this, cell phone addiction can easily be denied as an incredibly serious compulsive disorder that has been increasing with newly available technology.            As technology has progressed throughout the years, innovate phones and intriguing apps make it almost impossible and irresistible for individuals to be able to put their phones down in social settings, such as a family dinner. In fact, scientific debates have recently arisen that question whether cell phone addiction, along with gambling, should be added to the new DSM-V addiction list (Choliz, 2010, p. 373). Having said this, it is imperative to make it known that the primary purpose of this research paper cognizant of the actuality that chronic cell phone usage can indeed be a huge problem in society today. This can lead to problems inside one ’ s own family as well as conflicts in the workplace. The result of the excessive cell phone usage creates social, behavioral, and affective problems in the lives of future teenagers all around the world.

Something that must be openly understood is the fact that a teenager ’ s social experience can deeply be affected by the manner in which he or she uses his or her cell phone. For example, for a teenager to be using his or her cell phone during a party makes this certain individual unsocial. This can result in a person only having friends online as opposed to having the real thing of having personal friends to interact with on a daily basis. While this controversy might seem worrisome to many older individuals, people should realize that if a teenager is not able to have a social life, he/she might end up leading a depressed lifestyle. Also, as W.K. Park points out, loneliness is “positively associated with mobile phone addiction” which shows that addicted persons tend to reduce their feelings of loneliness by using mobile devices, such as a cell phone (2005, p. 260).

This kind of behavior would not only affect the teenager, but also the teenager ’ s family members. The fact of the matter is that cell phones have become so addictive nowadays that teenagers do not realize that they are addicted to their cell phones until it is too late and they have already lost the majority of their friends because of the manner in which they have shut everybody out of their lives. It goes without saying that this type of behavior should be stopped immediately because it has a huge impact on the kind of individuals that will grow up to lead the world into a better tomorrow. However, this “ better tomorrow ” will not be able to be made if these teenagers grow up being socially awkward.

A second aspect that must be considered when talking about cell phone addiction is the fact that, due to the fact that cell phones have so many addictive applications on them, teenagers choose to use their cell phones for extended periods of time in order to pass certain levels on a video game. While there is nothing wrong with a teenager playing a simple video game on his or her cell phone, some of these games are extremely violent for young teenagers to be playing. These violent video games are often times difficult for parents to monitor because no teenagers wishes to have his or her parents looking through his or her phone. Without parental supervision, teenagers find it much easier to download violent video games or explicit content unto their phones. This kind of behavior creates grave problems for teenagers, as they lose sense of what is real and what is portrayed in their little phone screen. In order to avoid this type of behavior altogether, it should be considered each child ’ s parents ’ responsibility to monitor what his or her child is watching in his or her cell phone and ensure that nothing inside that cell phone could prove to be detrimental to the teenager ’ s behavior either at home at school.

The reason as to why a cell phone addiction might prove to be increasingly dangerous to some teenagers is because of the fact that some teenagers are not quite ready to know how to keep their social and behavioral life in shape. As a result of this, teenagers often times find it normal to spend unreasonable hours throughout their own respective day looking through their phone and talking to other individuals online. The problem that is brought forth with these kinds of actions is that it is only a matter of time until face-to-face interaction is considered taboo. When society reaches this point, it is a fair statement to say that cell phone addiction will have taken over the majority of society. In order to prevent teenagers from being prone to chronic cell phone addictions is by making sure that the teenager ’ s parents limit the amount of time allowed on the cell phone. Another method that could be used by parents is for them to ask their teenagers to turn in their phones by the end of the night to ensure that their children are getting their necessary sleep and are not spending all of their night on the phone instead.

The result of the excessive cell phone usage creates social, behavioral, and affective problems in the lives of future teenagers all around the world. Despite the fact that there is no definitive manner by which this addiction can be put to a stop once and for all, there are a number of alternatives that could be taken by certain parents in order to ensure that their children do not become prone to the kind of addiction that is often linked to yield unproductive teenagers who do not have much ambition in life. In today ’ s increasingly technological world, it is without a doubt that it would be invariably difficult to put a stop to the kind of addiction that is present in the world today. One way that would help would be for researchers to conduct more studies on cell phone addiction and related addictions through bibliographic databases that refer specifically to Internet, video games, and cell phone addiction ( Carbonell, Guardiola, Beranuy, & Bellés, 2009).

Expository essay - My opinion on cell phones

tsubaki016 1 / -   Dec 13, 2011   #1 Hi,everyone: This is my essay from the English composition class. The teacher asks us to write expository. I don't know if I express what I thought appropriately. Or do I need to add something to develop my essay? (Of course, the grammatical errors like the usage of "the" etc.) I admit that there's space for improvement. But, I tried really hard to write over 300 words. It took me great deal of time. I would be very appreciate that someone suggest me how to make the article lengthy.(especially in a test) Please feel free to inform me what I should notice or improve. In modern society, cell phones have become an integral part of our daily lives. It is increasingly rare to find someone who doesn't have one. According to Wireless Intelligence, nearly 73% people possess cell phones over the world. As far as I am concerned, there are three main features. First, people replace heavy telephones with portable cell phones because of convenience. Also, cell phones are even lighter these days. You can contact with a person everywhere instead of waiting in a long line outside public telephone booth. Next, as technology advancing, the entertainment on cell phones would no longer be just boring, easy games such as Doodle Snake. More interesting, exciting games like Angry Birds are added to cell phones. With Internet connection, it's pretty convenient to browse the websites such as Facebook or Twitter. Also, sharing music and movies are available through cell phones. Just press one button, you can connect with the whole world. Most important of all, cell phones are very useful for emergencies. Take some examples. The devastating typhoon, hit the mountainous area in 1998, destroyed Hualien greatly. The rescue team saved a woman successfully because of the signal from her cell phone. In addition, the Norwegian massacre happened in July this year. There was a 15-year-old girl, hiding behind the rock, texted 46 messages from her cell phone. The action helped her calm down and let her parents know she's alive. Also, a built-in software called CPR&Choking in iphone show how to solve the problems when there was someone injuring. Either of the examples shows that cell phones do work in case of emergency. Indeed, we cannot live without cell phones nowadays. The gadgets bring a lot of convenience to our society. As more functions are added to cell phones, we'll surely benefit even more.

Smartphone App Decreased Distracted Driving and Other Noteworthy Studies This Week

— this piece is devoted to four exceptional papers in jama network open.

by Jeremy Faust , MD, MS, MA, Editor-in-Chief, MedPage Today July 13, 2024

A photo of a man texting while driving.

Jeremy Faust is editor-in-chief of MedPage Today , an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and a public health researcher. He is author of the Substack column Inside Medicine . Follow

Special note: I'm devoting this piece to a group of exceptional new papers that all appeared in JAMA Network Open in the past few days. It's unprecedented to devote this feature entirely to papers from a single journal, but I was so impressed with them that I wanted to share them all with you. (The journal has a new editor-in-chief , who I greatly respect; I'm not sure how many of these papers came on his watch, but I hope this is a sign of more great work to come.)

Item 1: Smartphone App Decreases Distracted Driving

The three major evils behind most fatal auto accidents are drinking while intoxicated, distracted driving, and failure to use a seat belt. Distracted driving -- mostly cell phone use -- is a 21st century danger that has not been adequately addressed.

What's a possible solution to smartphone-based distractions? A smartphone-based app, of course! Indeed, research published in JAMA Network Open points towards potential for progress. Drivers were randomized to a number of different app-based interventions (or control), to see if any of them would decrease the amount of time drivers spent handling their phones. (The apps provided the interventions and the surveillance needed to do the study.)

Some interventions worked, and some did not. The ones that worked combined providing feedback and financial incentives. Interestingly, loss-based financial incentives worked best; that is, drivers were more motivated by the threat of losing a preset amount of money for bad behavior than by being rewarded for good behavior. The amount of financial incentive provided was actually lower than the typical insurance reductions given to drivers with safe records, making this framework feasible as a future model. And that's important, because once the interventions were discontinued, the improved behavior waned substantially.

With over 800,000 motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted driving (and 3,522 deaths) in 2021, the stakes are high here. So the 20% reduction in distracted driving found in drivers who received both feedback and loss-framed financial incentives could save hundreds of lives per year. And maybe larger improvements are possible through enhanced means. Interestingly, the worst quartile of offenders did not show as much improvement as those who were in the second worst quartile, and it could be that these drivers pose an outsized threat.

This leaves me wondering whether much higher financial penalties might be necessary to reach the most dangerous segment of distracted drivers.

Item 2: Vaping and Secondhand Nicotine Exposure in Kids

Secondhand smoke from cigarettes has long been understood as a significant health hazard to children. But what about secondhand exposure from vaping?

For starters, outcome severity caused by secondary exposures from vaping are expected to be inherently far milder than those from traditional cigarette smoke. Smoking releases all kinds of hazardous material, inhalation of which can lead to heart disease and cancer. Meanwhile, the junk coming out of vaping is not great , but it's less dangerous.

A concern around both secondhand cigarette and vape exposure is nicotine, a substance which can harm developing brains. The question is whether secondhand vape exposure is less than that from cigarettes. To answer that, researchers identified kids (ages 3-11) who lived in homes of people who smoke cigarettes or who vape. They then took blood samples and quantified the amount of nicotine exposure in kids living with cigarette or vape users. The findings were published in JAMA Network Open.

Folks, it's not close.

First off, secondhand exposure of any kind is far lower than direct use. (Sadly, two children in the dataset had levels that were high enough to conclude primary use by the kids themselves.) Second, the comparison between secondhand smoke and secondhand vape exposure indicates that kids living with people who vape have 83% lower levels of nicotine in their blood. Of course, no exposure is best.

I continue to grapple with vaping and its "roll" in public health, as we've discussed . But in circumstances where it replaces traditional smoking that would have otherwise occurred, the benefits cannot be ignored.

Item 3: New Data Adds Confidence to RSV Vaccine Safety During Pregnancy

For decades, an RSV vaccine was elusive. But last year, we finally had vaccines that were safe, effective, and that the CDC recommended (and recently updated ) for high-risk groups, including infants and older people. That said, there was a hiccup in one of the trials in which there was a possible increase in the rate of prematurity in infants born to mothers who received the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine during the second trimester of pregnancy. Based on that, the CDC advised RSV vaccination (using Pfizer's version of a similar vaccine) should occur after week 32 of pregnancy.

Still, there were lingering concerns about whether even that policy might be associated with prematurity. Answer: No. Published this week in JAMA Network Open , researchers in New York assessed their impressive database from last season, and found no increase in premature infants among women who received the Pfizer RSV vaccine. That means that any concern about prematurity related to currently approved RSV vaccines should be minimal (or gone). The result is a vaccine with lower risk than some had feared, but all of the known benefits, including improved outcomes among infants born to mothers who received the RSV vaccine during pregnancy.

Item 4: Mental Health Care Access Via Telehealth Decreased After the COVID Emergency Period

The COVID-19 pandemic did one good thing: it finally moved telehealth from fringe to mainstream. Virtual visits made a huge difference during the emergency period, and for many fields, doing so in perpetuity makes sense.

One such field is mental health. While not all situations are perfectly amenable to virtual visits on Zoom, many are extremely well-suited for them. Unfortunately, access to key mental health services has fallen substantially since the official public health emergency (PHE) ended in 2023. That's according to a new report in JAMA Network Open . While access to "any" telehealth has not changed since the PHE, access to telehealth for substance use disorders has dropped by 10% (76% during to 66% after), as has telehealth-based psychotherapy (19% absolute decrease) and medication management (a situation in which small tweaks can make a big difference, but the inconvenience of in-person visits may be a barrier).

The telehealth revolution was a piece of unexpected progress brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. It's not good to see some of that reversing over time.

That's all, folks!

In a recent ABC News interview, New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks confirmed reports he is considering banning cellphones in schools as early as this September.

Gov. Kathy Hochul had earlier announced she’d introduce a bill during the January 2025 legislative session to ban smartphones in schools . The bill would permit phones capable of sending and receiving texts, but not those with internet access.

Objections to allowing K-12 students to use their phones in school stress their addictive nature. Hochul has already signed the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) For Kids Act , ordering social media companies to ban addictive feeds for those under 18.

Currently , Florida and Indiana ban cellphones in the classroom, while Ohio directs districts to draft their own policies for “cutting down” on cellphone use and Alabama “strongly encourages limits.” Virginia Gov. GlennYoungkin issued an Executive Order on July 9 , instructing his Department of Education to come up with “guidance for public school divisions to adopt local policies and procedures establishing cellphone-free education.” Spokane, Washington, announced its ban July 10, and the Kansas state Board of Education is considering one as well.

Would this be the right move for America’s largest school district? We asked NYC parents to weigh in, and the responses were nearly unanimous.

Brooklyn Mom Lena raved, “I am so unequivocally for the cellphone ban, I can barely contain my enthusiasm. It is insane to me that there are schools in which children are allowed to carry the world’s most addicting distraction in their pocket all day. As full-grown adults, we are suffering from our inability to stop looking at our devices and constantly consuming media in a format we are barely evolved enough to handle — and we want to give that same problem to children without fully formed brains, who already lack the ability to exhibit impulse control?”

“With access to nonstop videos and internet, they have forgotten how to keep themselves occupied,” lamented fellow parent Jessica F. “My son claims there’s nothing to do if he can’t play Minecraft. It has become an obsession.”

With multiple studies demonstrating a connection between heavy social media use and depression, anxiety, loneliness and suicidal ideation, the majority of parents we heard from were thrilled to know there might soon be a limit on in-school smartphone use.

“Having their phones at lunch keeps kids, especially socially awkward ones, from interacting with new people,” contributed parent A.F. “They use phones as a crutch and withdraw from socializing. I look forward to my high school-aged daughter being forced to socialize.”

“Although face to face doesn’t make for easier girl drama,” an anonymous mom admitted, “access to quick responses leads to more drama. A lot is said behind a screen that might not have been said face to face.”

Research has also demonstrated that children learn better and with deeper comprehension when reading on paper rather than on screens .

Dad M.V. said, “I would go a step farther and ask that teachers revert to giving homework assignments on paper, not on computers. Yes, computers are more convenient for teachers and students. But they pose similar addiction and distraction problems.”

Carrie C. recognized the extra burden policing devices would place on educators.

“I don’t think it’s a good use of teachers’ time or intellect for them to be the ones who have to enforce putting your smartphone away,” she wrote. “But I wouldn’t use that as a reason to shrug your shoulders and conclude that it’s not worth trying to make improvements when possible.”

For mother of three Sophia McShane, however, a ban on phones is unacceptable.

“I’ve had it with the [city Department of Education] and their constant changes that don’t benefit the children,” she raged. “My eldest goes to school on his own and picks up his siblings from school. A phone is a necessity. The DOE should stick to teaching these kids how to read and write. They’re failing at that but want to focus on phones. It’s ridiculous.”

Travel and safety are the most prevalent arguments for why a school cellphone ban is more dangerous than the troubles caused by phones.

But Kate L. doesn’t buy it. She argued that, “If (parents) need to contact their child for non-emergency reasons, do so before or after school or during lunch.”

Brooklyn’s Lena went further, saying, “The idea that children need to be immediately accessible to parents all day long is absurd. My middle schooler commutes roughly 40 min on the subway. He has a ‘stupid’ phone in order for me to be in touch with him or him with me to and from school or in case of emergency. If, God forbid, there was an emergency, I have no doubt I could get in contact with him during the day by calling the school. If the argument is, well what if there is a school shooting (again, God forbid), then I think we are trying to solve that problem with the wrong device.”

National polls have run the gamut from 72% of high school teachers opposing cellphones in the classroom to 70% of parents against a ban.

If the largest school district in America goes through with Banks’ cellphone moratorium, would that finally accumulate enough research and evidence to guide definitive policy for the entire country?

Energy consumption is one of the main performance metrics for smartphones. Energy efficiency is crucial because it directly affects battery life, which is one of the most important concerns for mobile device users. Moreover, optimizing energy consumption can enhance the device's overall performance by reducing overheating and extending the life of internal components. To evaluate the performance of these devices, databases are created by collecting several parameters during the daily use of the smartphone. This paper describes the creation of a dataset from the daily use of smartphones and tablets while performing everyday tasks. The dataset contains 98 features and 10,331,114 records related to dynamic data (such as battery usage, memory usage, mobile network, WiFi connectivity, screen brightness, and location), lists of apps running in the foreground and background, and static data, such as the Android version, kernel version, battery capacity, and the device model and manufacturer. The data were collected daily from ten different devices using the Profiler Tucandeira app and stored in CSV files. These files were later organized into a dataset through cleaning and preprocessing procedures. The dataset is publicly available in the Mendeley Data Repository and can be used for various types of analysis, including precise assessment of energy consumption, monitoring of apps running in both foreground and background, memory usage, and processing on each core, among others. Based on the data, it is possible to generate notifications to users about actions that can be taken to enhance smartphone performance. Another possible analysis is the identification of anomalies based on some variable of interest, such as energy consumption. This work focuses exclusively on the Android operating system, which is the most used in smartphones worldwide due to its open-source nature, flexibility, and wide range of available applications.

Early Explorations of Lightweight Models for Wound Segmentation on Mobile Devices

  • Borst, Vanessa
  • Dittus, Timo
  • Müller, Konstantin
  • Kounev, Samuel

The aging population poses numerous challenges to healthcare, including the increase in chronic wounds in the elderly. The current approach to wound assessment by therapists based on photographic documentation is subjective, highlighting the need for computer-aided wound recognition from smartphone photos. This offers objective and convenient therapy monitoring, while being accessible to patients from their home at any time. However, despite research in mobile image segmentation, there is a lack of focus on mobile wound segmentation. To address this gap, we conduct initial research on three lightweight architectures to investigate their suitability for smartphone-based wound segmentation. Using public datasets and UNet as a baseline, our results are promising, with both ENet and TopFormer, as well as the larger UNeXt variant, showing comparable performance to UNet. Furthermore, we deploy the models into a smartphone app for visual assessment of live segmentation, where results demonstrate the effectiveness of TopFormer in distinguishing wounds from wound-coloured objects. While our study highlights the potential of transformer models for mobile wound segmentation, future work should aim to further improve the mask contours.
