The fast growth of digital technologies as well as the amount of data that devices and applications collect daily, increasingly drive organisations to radically transform their business models. The impact of digitalization on Information technology (IT) projects are evident through the adoption of agile approaches and DevOps. What is not clear, is how digitalization is impacting the larger project management discipline. A bibliometric analysis of 478 articles provides insights into the state of project management digitalization. At a high level, project management is not yet digitalized but technologies are used as tools to optimise project management processes. The results also highlight the need for continuous learning to adapt to the transformation introduced by digitalization. The introduction of the Project Management Digitalization Research Agenda Cube can be used to guide practitioners and academia to facilitate the digitalization of project management.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, project management was undergoing gradual shift and moving from traditional ways of working toward embracing digitization. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transformation. This paper highlights the importance of digital project management (DPM), its adoption of digital technologies, the changing role of digital project manager, significant and abrupt swing in the rise of virtual teams and the benefits and challenges of remote project teams. This paper aims to discuss the latest development in project management and to lay out the rationale why DPM is here to stay even after the pandemic.
Design/methodology/approach
The author has based this research on reviewing publications from the project management journals and publications, interviews of project management professionals and analyzing data from a project management consultancy.
The pandemic accelerated the digitalization of project management including the adoption of digital tools and technologies, embracing an agile approach to implementing projects; working collaborative in remote teams; and breaking traditional barriers of geography, time zones and fundamentally how project teams collaborate.
Practical implications
Project management is being digitized, changing how teams work. Fueled by the pandemic, DPM accelerated its momentum. The rate of adoption is likely to be strong after the pandemic. Organizations and individuals should consider embracing DPM but with the full knowledge of both benefits and challenges.
Originality/value
DPM is still in its early days even though the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated its use. Today and likely after the pandemic, organizations and people are increasingly embracing digital technologies, remote teams and agile project management approaches to project management. It is likely that in the foreseeable future, nearly all project managers will be digital project managers, giving rise to the importance of understanding the challenges and benefits and building the digital skills for both individuals and organizations.

Project management is a management sub-field much related to technology and digitalization as it has been widely in use for their implementation and incorporation in industries, business processes, innovation development, automation, etc. Nevertheless, technology and digitalization, from their stand-point, also do impact the science of managing projects toward more efficient and fruitful practices leading to faster, less risky, and successful results. How do technology and digitalization impact project management and governance of projects during the last decade while these two have developed so much intensively is the foci in this research. We employed a bibliometric analysis on a scope of 1351 articles to shed the light over the mess in the literature, consisting of many case studies, conceptual and empirical research on how technology and digitalization are and were in use so far. The results of the research show trends and best practices but also point out some knowledge gaps in the literature on how the potential of technology and digitalization is applied in this decisive managerial interaction. Main contribution of the study is presenting clusters (applying the methodology of coupling) of the agenda from the last decade, a factorial analysis, and a thematic evolution analysis.

Digitalization of Project Management
Access to new resource related to Digitalization, Digital Transformation and Project Management added to PMWL
Resource provided by Maumita Patwary
2 nd April 2024 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Digitalization of Project Management. The new resource is titled “ Digitalization of Project Management: Opportunities in Research and Practice ”, by Carl Marnewick and Annlizé L. Marnewick and published in Project Leadership and Society in 2022.
The article discusses the impact of technology on project management and highlights a gap in understanding how digitalization affects project management practices. Although we know the reasons for using digital tools in projects, there is little understanding of their wider impact on project management. This suggests that more research is needed to explore this relationship and determine how digitalization affects different aspects of project management.
In addition, the article highlights the potential role of project management offices (PMOs) in promoting project management digitalization efforts. This suggests that PMOs could become key players in the adoption and promotion of digital tools in project management practice. Understanding the digital skills required of the PMO and their role in integrating digital tools into project management processes is critical to the effective use of technology.
The research article ultimately calls for more research on digital project management to address existing knowledge gaps and a deeper understanding of the digitalization process. This highlights the importance of a concerted effort to advance digital project management practices and make them a standard approach in the industry. Ultimately, the goal is to develop a shared vision between researchers and practitioners to advance digital project management.
