Typically, an essay has five paragraphs: an introduction, a conclusion, and three body paragraphs. However, there is no set rule about the number of paragraphs in an essay.
The number of paragraphs can vary depending on the type and scope of your essay. An expository or argumentative essay may require more body paragraphs to include all the necessary information, whereas a narrative essay may need fewer.
To enhance the coherence and readability of your essay, it’s important to follow certain rules regarding the structure. Take a look:
1. Arrange your information from the most simple to the most complex bits. You can start the body paragraph off with a general statement and then move on to specifics.
2. Provide the necessary background information at the beginning of your essay to give the reader the context behind your thesis statement.
3. Select topic statements that provide value, more information, or evidence for your thesis statement.
There are also various essay structures , such as the compare and contrast structure, chronological structure, problem method solution structure, and signposting structure that you can follow to create an organized and impactful essay.
An impactful, well-structured essay comes down to three important parts: the introduction, body, and conclusion.
1. The introduction sets the stage for your essay and is typically a paragraph long. It should grab the reader’s attention and give them a clear idea of what your essay will be about.
2. The body is where you dive deeper into your topic and present your arguments and evidence. It usually consists of two paragraphs, but this can vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing.
3. The conclusion brings your essay to a close and is typically one paragraph long. It should summarize the main points of the essay and leave the reader with something to think about.
The length of your paragraphs can vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing. So, make sure you take the time to plan out your essay structure so each section flows smoothly into the next.
When it comes to writing an essay, the introduction is a critical component that sets the tone for the entire piece. A well-crafted introduction not only grabs the reader’s attention but also provides them with a clear understanding of what the essay is all about. An essay editor can help you achieve this, but it’s best to know the brief yourself!
Letâs take a look at how to write an attractive and informative introductory paragraph.
1. Construct an attractive hook
To grab the reader’s attention, an opening statement or hook is crucial. This can be achieved by incorporating a surprising statistic, a shocking fact, or an interesting anecdote into the beginning of your piece.
For example, if youâre writing an essay about water conservation you can begin your essay with, âClean drinking water, a fundamental human need, remains out of reach for more than one billion people worldwide. It deprives them of a basic human right and jeopardizes their health and wellbeing.â
2. Provide sufficient context or background information
An effective introduction should begin with a brief description or background of your topic. This will help provide context and set the stage for your discussion.
For example, if you’re writing an essay about climate change, you start by describing the current state of the planet and the impact that human activity is having on it.
3. Construct a well-rounded and comprehensive thesis statement
A good introduction should also include the main message or thesis statement of your essay. This is the central argument that you’ll be making throughout the piece. It should be clear, concise, and ideally placed toward the end of the introduction.
By including these elements in your introduction, you’ll be setting yourself up for success in the rest of your essay.
Letâs take a look at an example.
The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane in 1903 revolutionized the way humans travel and explore the world. Prior to this invention, transportation relied on trains, boats, and cars, which limited the distance and speed of travel. However, the airplane made air travel a reality, allowing people to reach far-off destinations in mere hours. This breakthrough paved the way for modern-day air travel, transforming the world into a smaller, more connected place. In this essay, we will explore the impact of the Wright Brothers’ invention on modern-day travel, including the growth of the aviation industry, increased accessibility of air travel to the general public, and the economic and cultural benefits of air travel.
You can persuade your readers and make your thesis statement compelling by providing evidence, examples, and logical reasoning. To write a fool-proof and authoritative essay, you need to provide multiple well-structured, substantial arguments.
Letâs take a look at how this can be done:
1. Write a topic sentence for each paragraph
The beginning of each of your body paragraphs should contain the main arguments that youâd like to address. They should provide ground for your thesis statement and make it well-rounded. You can arrange these arguments in several formats depending on the type of essay youâre writing.
2. Provide the supporting information
The next point of your body paragraph should provide supporting information to back up your main argument. Depending on the type of essay, you can elaborate on your main argument with the help of relevant statistics, key information, examples, or even personal anecdotes.
3. Analyze the supporting information
After providing relevant details and supporting information, it is important to analyze it and link it back to your main argument.
End one body paragraph with a smooth transition to the next. There are many ways in which this can be done, but the most common way is to give a gist of your main argument along with the supporting information with transitory words such as âhoweverâ âin addition toâ âthereforeâ.
Hereâs an example of a body paragraph.
The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane revolutionized air travel. They achieved the first-ever successful powered flight with the Wright Flyer in 1903, after years of conducting experiments and studying flight principles. Despite their first flight lasting only 12 seconds, it was a significant milestone that paved the way for modern aviation. The Wright Brothers’ success can be attributed to their systematic approach to problem-solving, which included numerous experiments with gliders, the development of a wind tunnel to test their designs, and meticulous analysis and recording of their results. Their dedication and ingenuity forever changed the way we travel, making modern aviation possible.
A powerful concluding statement separates a good essay from a brilliant one. To create a powerful conclusion, you need to start with a strong foundation.
Letâs take a look at how to construct an impactful concluding statement.
1. Restructure your thesis statement
To conclude your essay effectively, don’t just restate your thesis statement. Instead, use what you’ve learned throughout your essay and modify your thesis statement accordingly. This will help you create a conclusion that ties together all of the arguments you’ve presented.
2. Summarize the main points of your essay
The next point of your conclusion consists of a summary of the main arguments of your essay. It is crucial to effectively summarize the gist of your essay into one, well-structured paragraph.
3. Create a lasting impression with your concluding statement
Conclude your essay by including a key takeaway, or a powerful statement that creates a lasting impression on the reader. This can include the broader implications or consequences of your essay topic.
Hereâs an example of a concluding paragraph.
The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane forever changed history by paving the way for modern aviation and countless aerospace advancements. Their persistence, innovation, and dedication to problem-solving led to the first successful powered flight in 1903, sparking a revolution in transportation that transformed the world. Today, air travel remains an integral part of our globalized society, highlighting the undeniable impact of the Wright Brothers’ contribution to human civilization.
Most essays are derived from the combination or variation of these four main types of essays . letâs take a closer look at these types.
1. Narrative essay

3. Argumentative essays
An argumentative essay is a type of essay that aims to persuade the reader to adopt a particular stance based on factual evidence and is one of the most common forms of college essays.

An essay is a form of writing in paragraph form that uses informal language, although it can be written formally. Essays may be written in first-person point of view (I, ours, mine), but third-person (people, he, she) is preferable in most academic essays. Essays do not require research as most academic reports and papers do; however, they should cite any literary works that are used within the paper.
When thinking of essays, we normally think of the five-paragraph essay: Paragraph 1 is the introduction, paragraphs 2-4 are the body covering three main ideas, and paragraph 5 is the conclusion. Sixth and seventh graders may start out with three paragraph essays in order to learn the concepts. However, essays may be longer than five paragraphs. Essays are easier and quicker to read than books, so are a preferred way to express ideas and concepts when bringing them to public attention.
Many of our most famous Americans have written essays. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Thomas Jefferson wrote essays about being good citizens and concepts to build the new United States. In the pre-Civil War days of the 1800s, people such as:
Through each era of American history, well-known figures in areas such as politics, literature, the arts, business, etc., voiced their opinions through short and long essays.
The ultimate persuasive essay that most students learn about and read in social studies is the âDeclaration of Independenceâ by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. Other founding fathers edited and critiqued it, but he drafted the first version. He builds a strong argument by stating his premise (claim) then proceeds to give the evidence in a straightforward manner before coming to his logical conclusion.
A. expository.
Essays written to explore and explain ideas are called expository essays (they expose truths). These will be more formal types of essays usually written in third person, to be more objective. There are many forms, each one having its own organizational pattern. Â Cause/Effect essays explain the reason (cause) for something that happens after (effect). Definition essays define an idea or concept. Compare/ Contrast essays will look at two items and show how they are similar (compare) and different (contrast).
An argumentative paper presents an idea or concept with the intention of attempting to change a readerâs mind or actions . These may be written in second person, using âyouâ in order to speak to the reader. This is called a persuasive essay. There will be a premise (claim) followed by evidence to show why you should believe the claim.
Narrative means story, so narrative essays will illustrate and describe an event of some kind to tell a story. Most times, they will be written in first person. The writer will use descriptive terms, and may have paragraphs that tell a beginning, middle, and end in place of the five paragraphs with introduction, body, and conclusion. However, if there is a lesson to be learned, a five-paragraph may be used to ensure the lesson is shown.
The goal of a descriptive essay is to vividly describe an event, item, place, memory, etc. This essay may be written in any point of view, depending on whatâs being described. There is a lot of freedom of language in descriptive essays, which can include figurative language, as well.
Essays are an important piece of literature that can be used in a variety of situations. Theyâre a flexible type of writing, which makes them useful in many settings . History can be traced and understood through essays from theorists, leaders, artists of various arts, and regular citizens of countries throughout the world and time. For students, learning to write essays is also important because as they leave school and enter college and/or the work force, it is vital for them to be able to express themselves well.
Sir Francis Bacon was a leading philosopher who influenced the colonies in the 1600s. Many of Americaâs founding fathers also favored his philosophies toward government. Bacon wrote an essay titled âOf Nobilityâ in 1601 , in which he defines the concept of nobility in relation to people and government. The following is the introduction of his definition essay. Note the use of âweâ for his point of view, which includes his readers while still sounding rather formal.
âWe will speak of nobility, first as a portion of an estate, then as a condition of particular persons. A monarchy, where there is no nobility at all, is ever a pure and absolute tyranny; as that of the Turks. For nobility attempers sovereignty, and draws the eyes of the people, somewhat aside from the line royal. But for democracies, they need it not; and they are commonly more quiet, and less subject to sedition, than where there are stirps of nobles. For men’s eyes are upon the business, and not upon the persons; or if upon the persons, it is for the business’ sake, as fittest, and not for flags and pedigree. We see the Switzers last well, notwithstanding their diversity of religion, and of cantons. For utility is their bond, and not respects. The united provinces of the Low Countries, in their government, excel; for where there is an equality, the consultations are more indifferent, and the payments and tributes, more cheerful. A great and potent nobility, addeth majesty to a monarch, but diminisheth power; and putteth life and spirit into the people, but presseth their fortune. It is well, when nobles are not too great for sovereignty nor for justice; and yet maintained in that height, as the insolency of inferiors may be broken upon them, before it come on too fast upon the majesty of kings. A numerous nobility causeth poverty, and inconvenience in a state; for it is a surcharge of expense; and besides, it being of necessity, that many of the nobility fall, in time, to be weak in fortune, it maketh a kind of disproportion, between honor and means.â
A popular modern day essayist is Barbara Kingsolver. Her book, âSmall Wonders,â is full of essays describing her thoughts and experiences both at home and around the world. Her intention with her essays is to make her readers think about various social issues, mainly concerning the environment and how people treat each other. The link below is to an essay in which a child in an Iranian village she visited had disappeared. The boy was found three days later in a bearâs cave, alive and well, protected by a mother bear. She uses a narrative essay to tell her story.
Many rap songs are basically mini essays, expressing outrage and sorrow over social issues today, just as the 1960s had a lot of anti-war and peace songs that told stories and described social problems of that time. Any good song writer will pay attention to current events and express ideas in a creative way.
A well-known essay written in 1997 by Mary Schmich, a columnist with the Chicago Tribune, was made into a popular video on MTV by Baz Luhrmann. Schmichâs thesis is to wear sunscreen, but she adds strong advice with supporting details throughout the body of her essay, reverting to her thesis in the conclusion.
Research paper.
Research papers follow the same basic format of an essay. They have an introductory paragraph, the body, and a conclusion. However, research papers have strict guidelines regarding a title page, header, sub-headers within the paper, citations throughout and in a bibliography page, the size and type of font, and margins. The purpose of a research paper is to explore an area by looking at previous research. Some research papers may include additional studies by the author, which would then be compared to previous research. The point of view is an objective third-person. No opinion is allowed. Any claims must be backed up with research.
Students dread hearing that they are going to write an essay, but essays are one of the easiest and most relaxed types of writing they will learn. Mastering the essay will make research papers much easier, since they have the same basic structure. Many historical events can be better understood through essays written by people involved in those times. The continuation of essays in todayâs times will allow future historians to understand how our new world of technology and information impacted us.

A formal essay is a piece of non- fiction writing that states a thesis and provides evidence to back it up. This type of essay is commonly assigned to high school and college students in language arts classes as part of their writing education. Formal essays can range in length from a few paragraphs to many typed pages, depending on the complexity of the argument and, in many students' cases, the particular assignment's requirements. These essays typically contain an introductory paragraph that acquaints the reader with the thesis statement , followed by several paragraphs of evidence that support the writerâs argument. The essay typically ends with a conclusion that restates the thesis and reiterates the main points of the paper.
The process of writing a formal essay begins with the composition of the thesis statement on which the rest of the paper will be built. Students must usually find an essay topic within the confines of a certain subject area. Writers should take their time in finding a unique, compelling subject they are interested in researching and writing about. The essay writer also will need to think about the desired length of the final essay and determine if the topic is too long or too short for a given assignment. Typically, both professional and student writers are limited by a word count when asked to compose a formal essay.
Once the writer has found an appropriate thesis statement, he will need to find persuasive evidence to back up the claim he is making. Some essays make multiple claims that will need to be supported through the course of the paper. Formal essays usually require evidence from reputable sources such as peer-reviewed books and periodicals. In the past, much of this research was performed in a library, but the introduction of the Internet has meant that many of the scholarly resources necessary for researching a paper can now be found online. Professional writers may have access to special information databases to help them find reliable evidence to back up their claims.
The goal of research is that the writer will uncover enough evidence to back up his initial thesis, although he may need to modify it or even find a new thesis, depending on what his research reveals. He should now be able to begin arranging his evidence and composing a rough draft of his formal essay. Writers must provide citations for any work in the essay that is not their own. These citations can take the form of end-notes or footnotes, depending on which style guide the writer is using. Failure to properly cite another writer's work is considered plagiarism and can result in serious consequences in both the academic and professional worlds.
Writing and revising a formal essay can take a significant amount of time, even for a relatively short paper, so it is important for the writer to plan accordingly. After the essay is completed, a student should have someone else look over the essay for mistakes in grammar or structure. Professional writers may have an editor who oversees this process. While formal essay writing can be a laborious process, it is a necessary part of learning to develop ideas and prove their validity to readers. This type of essay writing makes up a large part of academic and policy development in many areas around the world.

When writing your extended essay you should use language that is formal and academic in tone. The chart below gives you some idea of the differences between informal and formal essays. See the box below for examples of the differences in tone in informal and formal essays written on identical topics. A PDF of this chart, and the examples below, is in the box to the right , along with a list of tips for avoiding colloquial writing.
Informal essay (sometimes also called personal or familiar essay) | ||
---|---|---|
Author’s viewpoint | Usually uses first-person pronoun; directly addresses the reader. | Usually uses third-person pronoun. |
Subject/content: Sources of evidence | Frequently drawn from life of the student and everyday events. | More commonly drawn from shared historical events or literature or other forms of knowledge. |
Tone | Frequently more personal and subjective; may be ironic, amusing, thoughtful, angry or serious; conversational and casual. | Tends to be removed from the subject and appears to be objective; tends to hold emotions in check and express concerns through strong arguments and powerful rhetorical devices. |
Structure | Appears to be more loosely structured. | Follows a structure that focuses on the development of one clear argument at a time to support a clearly stated thesis. |
Location of the research purpose/question
| May appear anywhere in the essay; may not be explicitly stated. | Stated explicitly, generally located in the first or second paragraph of the essay. |
Vocabulary | Everyday words; slang and colloquialisms; contractions; uses “you” and “I”. | Technical words according to subject; no slang or contractions; avoids “you” and “I” (the use of “I” in the introduction and conclusion of an essay is permitted but in the body of the essay is best avoided in order to maintain an academic tone). |
Purpose | Entertainment; gentle reflection. | Presentation of facts and ideas with critical evaluation, arguing a point and analyzing in detail. |
The following examples highlight the differences between formal and informal tone.
Language B - English
Informal: I decided to write an extended essay on how hip-hop works as protest of the lower classes because I think the music is cool and really gets people dancing, inspiring those people who wouldn’t normally think there’s any point in being against anything to listen to the message. Being an enthusiastic hip-hop dancer myself, I really wanted to find out some more about this. |
Formal: This extended essay on how the lyrics of hip-hop developed as a form of protest against a society segregating the working classes is based on the premise of the music having a distinct and energizing rhythm that really inspires people thereby reaching out to audiences who wouldn’t normally believe in protest, let alone speak out in public. Thus, the music becomes a vehicle for words of protest that can and indeed have changed the world. My own experience with dancing hip-hop at a relatively advanced and skilled level fuelled my desire to research this topic in more depth. |
Informal: Biology has always been a passion of mine. Ever since I was searching for frogspawn in my grandparent’s pond as a four-year-old and annoying my mum with a battery of jam jars on the window sill in which I was trying to raise tadpoles I have been fascinated with observing nature in detail. Even in English, reading Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney, I found myself thinking up an experiment to do with dragonflies and bluebottles. I have a fish tank at home with three different sorts of fish. I’ve noticed that they all respond differently when I feed them. I’m wondering what else is different in their behavior so, in this extended essay, I’m going to find out how they react to light. |
Formal:
This extended essay is focused on investigating the phototaxic responses of three different species of fish that occupy different areas of an aquarium: danios ( ), which group near the surface of the water, black skirt tetra ( ), which swim in the middle of the tank, and kuhli loach ( ), which swim near the bottom of the tank. It is anticipated that they will respond differently to light according to their niche within the tank. The outcome of my investigation could inform the feeding strategy used for different fish as well as highlight the adaptive nature of toxic response in fish. In addition, this essay may help to inspire some fellow students to view their fish with new interest, and consider their own strategies in populating a fish tank.
|
Informal: When I go into a supermarket there is always gentle background music playing, although in the clothes shops I like it is always loud pop music. At breakfast my dad likes to listen to Rossini string sonatas, while my little brother has heavy metal on his iPod and will head-bang his way through a bowl of cornflakes. My extended essay is trying to research why people rely on certain types of music to influence their mood and how music is used in this way for advertising. I am not sure if there is a connection and whether the music does affect, for example, people’s shopping habits, but it will be interesting to try to find out, especially to see if different peoples’ brains are wired differently when it comes to music. |
Formal:
This extended essay intends to investigate whether there is a causal relationship between music listened to and the mood of individuals. Additionally, it will seek to explore whether this relationship is used in advertising to encourage people to spend money. |

Formal and informal essay definitions
A formal essay is a type of writing that includes not only essays, but letters, reports, and job applications written in a formal style with the usage of a strong vocabulary. In a formal essay, all rules of punctuation and grammar are observed by essay writers . Essays of this style are specific, focused on facts, and include a standard, template language.
An informal essay is a type of essay written more for enjoyment with the use of vivid expressions and abbreviations. Grammar rules and punctuation are not always strictly observed.
The structure of a formal essay is standard and consists of the following parts:
Title â the name of the essay, reflecting the theme of the narrative. Introduction â 2-4 short sentences that cover the topic of the essay. The main body â 2-3 paragraphs, describing the essence of the work. In them, you need to fully and competently open the topic, give arguments, and argue them. Conclusion â 2-4 sentences summarizing everything that has been said before. In this part, you make a general conclusion on the topic of the essay.
Each of the paragraphs in the main part of the essay begin with an introductory sentence (topic sentence); this is the âintroductionâ to the paragraph. Subsequent sentences develop and confirm the thought expressed in the topic sentence.

The Vision of Seoul
Seoul as we know it now is a product of many historical changes of the past. Ever since the rule of the Joseon Dynasty, Seoul remains the capital and the hub of South Korea. Many architectural miracles can be found on the streets of this city narrating its history. Even its dynamic advancement in the financial, social, and engineering spheres that can be seen from the exponentially growing skyline cannot conceal the cultural property scattered through the metropolis. Enveloped by nature, Seoul combines scenic landscapes encircled by mountains, rivers, and forests with high-tech elements that could only be imagined recently in science fiction literature. The duality of new and old, artificial and natural, and modern and traditional makes it a one-of-a-kind location and catch the eye of the outside world.
The location of the most important city in the country was not chosen spontaneously. The spot was picked according to the tradition of feng shui that Joseon rulers were adhering to. This principle states that a place should be organized according to the flow of energy. The area encircled by the wonders of nature was a perfect location to settle (Seoul Architecture Guide 22). The traditionalism and closed off condition of the country experienced a change after the beginning of the Empire of Korea. General Westernization had begun with the new foreign policy which opened it for trade and other relations with Europe and the United States. Economy, law, education, the military system, and many other frameworks were modified to fit in with the new counterparts (Seoul Architecture Guide 24). However, the remains of the past are still evident as, for example, some parts of the Hanyangdoseong, or Seoul City Wall, that encircled the city earlier still stand to reflect the heritage.
Not long after, Korea was occupied by Japanese forces. This period brought many changes that helped the country to advance, but also played a role in oppressing cultural peculiarities and the Korean language. The transformation of Seoul included the improvement of the transport system and adaptation to a bigger population ( Seoul Architecture Guide 25). These changes led to the extension of the banks of the Hangang and swift reconstruction of the surrounding districts. The scenery of the biggest river in Seoul has become one of the most popular destinations for citizens and tourists alike. The metropolis as we see it now is the result of its fast capability to adjust and cater to the needs of its population. Growing numbers of the city residents had increased the differences between the groups. It came to the point where metropolitan inhabitants mixed with the farmers and other types of rural populations, creating a special cultural mix specific to Seoul.
Even when Korea was closed off, the impact of its neighbors, mainly China and Japan, was immense on the culture and the spoken and written language. However, after the start of the open policy, a more diversified population was at the heart of Korea. Their traditions and beliefs shaped the Korean culture as we know it now. Language is a good reflection of such developments. One of the major events for the Korean language was a start of the official usage of Hangul instead of Chinese characters (Sang-Hun and Torchia 6). This event had helped in distinguishing it as a separate and independent member of the Asian languages. Even with the new type of writing, a prominent feature of their language that remains is the use of idioms. They reflect the gradual development of some significant events in the history. After the years of famine, the topic of food is a frequent subject in conversation (Sang-Hun and Torchia 10). To ask if a person had eaten was a genuine worry that now has become a standard greeting with a polite concern. The customs live on in the society, although they get changed due to the external factors that the country experiences. Same as how the rising population affected the features of culture, living conditions were also influenced.
The overpopulation problem was resolved almost instantaneously. New areas were restructured and used to house the assorted selection of the new city residents. One of the most popular recently developed regions that many people are aware of is Gangnam. The seventies were a booming period for Seoul reconstruction; with the new district standing tall, the city became as we can see it now, divided into north (Gangbuk) and south (Gangnam) areas ( Seoul Architecture Guide 27). Today, Samseong-Dong is one of the most esteemed and affluent locations in Gangnam and the whole of Seoul; business, leisure, and housing estates are all available there. With a heap of high-end stores, prestigious hotels and restaurants, and extravagant night clubs, it is a significant spot that shows the development of the city (Marshall). The rapid transformation of the territories had created a town like no other. Even though its history as a capital began in the fourteenth century, it is filled with modern technology and does not stop even now. Improvement is one of the key principles followed in the process. This is the reason why Seoul is so filled with parks.
Having to live in a metropolitan city like Seoul, people get tired of the constant buzzing of the millions of others that surround them every day on the way to work, eat, relax, or sleep. The exhaust fumes resulting from the high levels of gas pollution is an everyday occurrence for Seoulites, which makes them wear masks. In order to escape the troubles, the usual alternative is an evening spent in nature (Marshall). Due to the beneficial situation, the city is enclosed by mountains, forests, and rivers. In case a traveler is feeling as to get on with their inner state and relax outdoors, the opportunities are multiple. However, there are also many variants for those who do not want to waste time on the trip; the amount of parks is enormous and increases as time goes by. The choice can be rather hard because of the surprising number of them. The nature in Seoul is worth a separate mention due to the way that the city takes care of its condition. When taking a look at the map of the city, green patches can be seen all over it, constituting a big part of the Seoulite life.
Seoul is a one-of-a-kind city. Everything is different about it for the Western onlookers. Even though Koreans have experienced fascination with Western culture, the increasing interest in the unique fusion of its original features amalgamated with traditions is much closer to their ideals. However, underneath the novelty and pursuit of the different, the soul of the old Seoul can be spotted. With antique architecture and a distinct mood, this city is a perfect example of advancement in everything without losing identity.

If you compare two essays that are identical in content, but written in different styles, then the informal one will be shorter. Do you know why? Because the formal style often involves the use of longer words. Unlike the informal style, phrasal verbs are not used in the formal style, except those that can not be replaced by a longer equivalent. The same should be done with nouns: if you have a choice between a simplified word and itâs longer, technical variant when writing a formal essay, choose the longer one.
In the informal style for writing essays, the use of active voice prevails over the use of passive. Informal essays are more personalized, while formal essays speak about facts.
A characteristic feature of the informal style is a first-person appeal, with the use of âI.â An informal style makes it possible to improvise, and a formal style is more structured with a particular template. Typical for the formal style is the use of the pronoun âwe.â
Slang expressions are not used in the formal style. The same goes for most idiomatic expressions. Formal style uses the language of specifics and a formal vocabulary, so the use of slang is unacceptable.
An informal style, along with slang expressions, allows the use of abbreviated forms of verbs âto be,â âhave,â âhas,â âwould,â âwill,â and others as well: âIâm,â âweâve,â âheâs,â and so on. In the formal style, no abbreviations are ever used, as all forms must be written completely: âI am,â âwe have,â âhe is,â âthey will,â âshe would,â and so on.
Formal essays are impersonal, and are not addressed to anyone. Imperative constructions in formal essays are replaced by passive ones.
As you can see, formal and informal styles are radically different from each other. Thus, when starting to write a formal or informal essay, remember the differences in the formatting, and follow the vocabulary, grammar, and other language tools so that your essay maintains one consistent style when you write my college essay .
The peculiarity of writing a formal essay is that it is necessary to use certain common phrases. And in this article, more complex formal expressions are collected, which are used mainly in formal essays and allow you to get a high grade. Letâs look at them. Letâs start with the phrases, with which you can:
We examined various formal phrases that you can use to express your opinion in an essay. Reading through the next section you will learn how to express your opinion if you have already substantiated it. To make the text structured and logical, it is important to first give arguments and evidence, and then express your point of view. Below you will find phrases with which you can do it.
â â This suggests that âŚâ Instead of âthis,â it is possible to give the results of the conducted studies. For example, data from surveys of public opinion (a survey) or statistics (statistical evidence). â âThis proves that âŚâ â âIt leads to the conclusion that âŚâ â âIt can thus be suggested/assumed that âŚâ â âIt follows from the above that âŚâ
Knowledge of formal expressions is useful not only when writing academic essays and passing exams, but also in many other life situations. After all, sometimes simple phrases and a vulgar style are unacceptable, and their use can spoil the opinion about you.
It is very important to reread an essay several times after finishing it, even if you do not have to correct much. If you feel that you canât find all of your mistakes (finding errors in your own text is more difficult), read the text to an outsider. Getting a friendâs help, especially if he or she is a linguist, allows you to identify a significant percentage of poorly constructed sentences, as well as many grammatical and logical errors. You can also check your paper via AI essay detector to make sure all of your sentences seem like human written and you donât overuse passive voice in writing.
Note: you can dictate an essay to a sound recorder and listen to it. Often, in this way, it is possible to detect the inconsistency of grammatical constructions or inconsistencies in the logical course of things. Be sure to use spelling in a text editor, but do not forget to read the text yourself. For example, Microsoft Word sometimes misses curious mistakes that can greatly spoil the impression of your essay.
If you are not sure about something, look in the dictionary. And one more useful trick: before you finish the work, put it off for a couple of hours (even better, for a day), then return to it with a fresh look. This is another reason why you should start writing essays in advance, having enough time in reserve.

A formal definition is based upon a concise, logical pattern that includes as much information as it can within a minimum amount of space. The primary reason to include definitions in your writing is to avoid misunderstanding with your audience. A formal definition consists of three parts:
For example:
Although these examples should illustrate the manner in which the three parts work together, they are not the most realistic cases. Most readers will already be quite familiar with the concepts of water, comic books, and astronomy. For this reason, it is important to know when and why you should include definitions in your writing.
"Stellar Wobble is a measurable variation of speed wherein a star's velocity is shifted by the gravitational pull of a foreign body."
"Throughout this essay, the term classic gaming will refer specifically to playing video games produced for the Atari, the original Nintendo Entertainment System, and any systems in-between." Note: not everyone may define "classic gaming" within this same time span; therefore, it is important to define your terms
"Pagan can be traced back to Roman military slang for an incompetent soldier. In this sense, Christians who consider themselves soldiers of Christ are using the term not only to suggest a person's secular status but also their lack of bravery.'
"Rhyming poetry consists of lines that contain end rhymes." Better: "Rhyming poetry is an artform consisting of lines whose final words consistently contain identical, final stressed vowel sounds."

A good writer knows when to use formal or informal language in their writing. Weâll go over the difference between the two and provide examples.
Effective writing has a lot to do with not only what you write but also how you write it. The type of language you useâ formal or informal âmust suit your audience and setting.
If you want your message to resonate, then it wouldnât be a good idea to use colloquialisms in formal settings. Similarly, you shouldnât use rigid language when youâre writing about something light, playful, or funny.
But what exactly is the difference between formal and informal language in writing? Thatâs what weâll be covering in this blog. Weâll also provide helpful examples so you can better recognize the difference.
Plus, weâll show you a paraphrasing tool thatâll ensure your text is pristine, regardless of what youâre writing.
Letâs begin!
Compared to formal language, informal language is considered more casual. Informal language also evolves much more rapidly than formal language. While new words or phrases can be introduced to informal language seemingly overnight (e.g., GOAT referring to the greatest of all time) , these changes can take years in formal language (e.g., you replacing thou, thee, and thy ).
But there are also more notable differences between formal and informal language. Weâll give some examples below.
It is advised to avoid contractions (shortened versions of words) in formal language, but theyâre acceptable in informal language.
Unfortunately, the team could not replicate the results. (Formal)
Unfortunately, the team couldnât replicate the results. ( Informal)
Formal language is also marked by an absence of colloquial phrases and slang (words or phrases that are common only in everyday speech), but are typically used in informal language.
Everyone was disappointed . (Formal)
Everyone was bummed . ( Informal)
Generally, first-person pronouns (like I and we ) are avoided when writing with formal language. However, itâs accepted (and expected) in informal language.
The students were asked to fill out the questionnaire. (Formal)
Informal: We asked the students to fill out the questionnaire. ( Informal)
When using formal language in your writing, it is also recommended to replace phrasal verbs (proper verbs that are followed by one or more prepositions and act as a single verb).
It was something the protestors could endure . (Formal)
It was something the protestors could put up with . ( Informal)
When writing for formal settings, it is recommended to follow all grammar rules, even those that are considered trivial. In informal settings, some grammar rules can be ignored. For example, in informal settings, itâs okay to use who in place of whom . However, always using who in place of whom is not recommended when writing with formal language.
Whom do I have to speak to? (Formal)
Who do I have to speak to? ( Informal)
Formal language tends to use longer, more complex vocabulary. Sometimes it is not recommended to use this type of vocabulary with informal language (depending on what youâre writing) because it can confuse or distract your audience.
They needed assistance while recovering from the outcomes of the hurricane. (Formal)
They needed help while recovering from the effects of the hurricane. ( Informal)
Whether youâre writing in a professional or academic setting or a casual and creative one, LanguageTool can provide stronger vocabulary optionsâall you have to do is double-click on the word. This multilingual spelling and grammar checker can also detect different types of errors, whether you choose to write in formal or informal language.
Remember that choosing when to use formal or informal language in your writing depends on what youâre writing and who your audience is. However, you should also be mindful of the fact that formal and informal language is a spectrum, and some types of writing can fall in between these categories. Regardless of what type of language youâre using in your writing, keep these differences in mind to guarantee the most effective writing possible.
Go well beyond grammar and spell checking. Impress with clear, precise, and stylistically flawless writing instead.

Just as the name suggests, a definition essay defines and explains a term or a concept. Unlike a narrative essay, the purpose of writing this essay is only to inform the readers.
Writing this essay type can be deceivingly tricky. Some terms, concepts, and objects have concrete definitions when explained. In contrast others are solely based on the writerâÂÂs understanding and point of view.
A definition essay requires a writer to use different approaches when discussing a term. These approaches are the following:
A single or combination of approaches can be used in the essay.Â
There are several types of definition essays that you may be asked to write, depending on the purpose and scope of the assignment.Â
In this section, we will discuss some of the most common types of definition essays.
This type of essay provides a detailed description of a term or concept, emphasizing its key features and characteristics.Â
The goal of a descriptive definition essay is to help readers understand the term or concept in a more profound way.
In a stipulative definition essay, the writer provides a unique definition of a term or concept. This type of essay is often used in academic settings to define a term in a particular field of study.Â
The goal of a stipulative definition essay is to provide a precise and clear definition that is specific to the context of the essay.
This compare and contrast essay type involves analyzing a term or concept in-depth. Breaking it down into its component parts, and examining how they relate to each other.Â
The goal of an analytical definition essay is to provide a more nuanced and detailed understanding of the term or concept being discussed.
A persuasive definition essay is an argumentative essay that aims to persuade readers to accept a particular definition of a term or concept.
The writer presents their argument for the definition and uses evidence and examples to support their position.
An explanatory definition essay is a type of expository essay . It aims to explain a complex term or concept in a way that is easy to understand for the reader.Â
The writer breaks down the term or concept into simpler parts and provides examples and analogies to help readers understand it better.
An extended definition essay goes beyond the definition of a word or concept and provides a more in-depth analysis and explanation.Â
The goal of an extended definition essay is to provide a comprehensive understanding of a term, concept, or idea. This includes its history, origins, and cultural significance.Â
Writing a definition essay is simple if you know the correct procedure. This essay, like all the other formal pieces of documents, requires substantial planning and effective execution.
The following are the steps involved in writing a definition essay effectively:
Instead of choosing a term that has a concrete definition available, choose a word that is complicated . Complex expressions have abstract concepts that require a writer to explore deeper. Moreover, make sure that different people perceive the term selected differently.Â
Once you have a word to draft your definition essay for, read the dictionary. These academic definitions are important as you can use them to compare your understanding with the official concept.
Drafting a definition essay is about stating the dictionary meaning and your explanation of the concept. So the writer needs to have some information about the term.
In addition to this, when exploring the term, make sure to check the termâÂÂs origin. The history of the word can make you discuss it in a better way.
Coming up with an exciting title for your essay is important. The essay topic will be the first thing that your readers will witness, so it should be catchy.
Creatively draft an essay topic that reflects meaning. In addition to this, the usage of the term in the title should be correctly done. The readers should get an idea of what the essay is about and what to expect from the document.
Now that you have a topic in hand, it is time to gather some relevant information. A definition essay is more than a mere explanation of the term. It represents the writerâÂÂs perception of the chosen term and the topic.
So having only personal opinions will not be enough to defend your point. Deeply research and gather information by consulting credible sources.
The gathered information needs to be organized to be understandable. The raw data needs to be arranged to give a structure to the content.
Here's a generic outline for a definition essay:

A formal definition essay defines a term or concept. Definition essays are a form of expository writing in which the writer provides information about the term to their audience. They typically follow a standard essay format and include both a definition and an analysis of the term. Review the example essays below and try exploring some of the suggested essay topics, too.
You can follow the general structure for an expository essay when writing a definition essay.
While the basic pieces of the essay are the same, definition essays should include some key elements.
There are basically two types of definition essays. They can define concrete concepts or abstract concepts. They should also provide a larger understanding of the term as a concept. Here first is an example of a definition essay for a concrete concept.
You know the feeling: Youâre reading a website or streaming a movie when your Wi-Fi goes out. What is Wi-Fi, and why do we depend on it so much? Understanding the concept of Wi-Fi is important for users of modern technology because it connects us to the world. Wi-Fi is the wireless local network between nearby devices, such as wireless routers, computers, smartphones, tablets, or external drives. It is part of the LAN (local area network) protocols and has largely replaced the wired Ethernet option. When your device has Wi-Fi turned on, it can find the nearest router. If the router is connected to a modem and works with an Internet service provider (ISP), your device can now access the Internet and other devices on the network. Wi-Fi covers a much more limited area than a cell phone tower. However, Wi-Fi does not use expensive cellular data like LTE or 4G. Many people believe that Wi-Fi is short for âwireless fidelity.â The founding members of Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance needed a name that was easier to remember than âwireless ethernet,â and much easier than Wi-Fiâs actual original name, âIEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence.â They added the slogan âThe Standard for Wireless Fidelity,â but dropped it after people mistook the meaning of Wi-Fi. The name is a play on the term âhi-fi,â which is a high-quality reproduction in stereo sound (âhigh fidelityâ), and not related to Wi-Fi at all. The IEEE 802.11b standard has since been upgraded to faster protocols, including 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac. Because of Wi-Fiâs widespread use and popularity, Merriam-Webster added âWi-Fiâ to its dictionary in 2005, only eight years after it was invented. Today, most modern computers depend on Wi-Fi for Internet access. Free Wi-Fi is available in many restaurants, hotels, and coffee shops. It is also easy to install in your home for private use. However, even private Wi-Fi connections should be password-protected. Joining an unprotected Wi-Fi network, or allowing others to join your network, could compromise your online safety and privacy. Understanding what Wi-Fi really is can protect you and your information. When used correctly and safely, Wi-Fi is an essential part of the 21st-century experience. Whether youâre watching your favorite show or finishing up a research paper, you should know more about how data travels to and from your device.
The basic structure of a definition essay is the same whether youâre defining a concrete or abstract concept. Here is an example definition essay for an abstract concept.
Everyone feels afraid from time to time. From feeling the jitters to facing a lifelong phobia, itâs difficult to put fears aside when trying to accomplish a goal. But, one doesnât need to forget that they are afraid in order to be brave; in fact, bravery doesnât exist without real fear behind it. Bravery is the mindset one takes when facing a challenge that could be dangerous or difficult. The task could be objectively dangerous, such as engaging in battle or driving in adverse conditions. A person could also perceive a seemingly harmless situation as challenging, such as climbing a flight of stairs or talking to someone theyâd like to date. A brave act requires one to face and embrace the task rather than withdraw from it. There are examples of bravery in every community. Look no farther than your local fire station or police station to see acts of bravery. Community heroes help others in small and large ways every day, often at great risk to their own lives. Students are brave when they stand up to a bully or present a project in front of the whole class. Practicing small acts of bravery can prepare a person to lead a heroic life. âFearlessnessâ can be a connotation of bravery, but itâs not a true synonym (although bystanders may believe that a brave person acts without fear). If a task does not seem frightening in some way, it would be simple to complete, requiring no bravery at all. Heroes who exhibit bravery often put themselves at risk to help others. The closest synonym for bravery would be âcourage.â The ability to do whatâs right despite a real or perceived threat requires strength, making âfortitudeâ another near-synonym for bravery. Bravery doesnât exist without fear. No matter how challenging or dangerous a task can be, bravery allows a person to work alongside their fear rather than forget about it. The next time you see someone acting heroically, remind yourself that they are probably terrified in that moment â and that makes them even braver.

An essay outline is a way of planning the structure of your essay before you start writing. It involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every point you will cover in each paragraph , giving you a picture of how your argument will unfold.
Upload your document to correct all your mistakes in minutes
Organizing your material, presentation of the outline, examples of essay outlines, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay outlines.
At the stage where youâre writing an essay outline, your ideas are probably still not fully formed. You should know your topic  and have already done some preliminary research to find relevant sources , but now you need to shape your ideas into a structured argument.
Look over any information, quotes and ideas youâve noted down from your research and consider the central point you want to make in the essayâthis will be the basis of your thesis statement . Once you have an idea of your overall argument, you can begin to organize your material in a way that serves that argument.
Try to arrange your material into categories related to different aspects of your argument. If youâre writing about a literary text, you might group your ideas into themes; in a history essay, it might be several key trends or turning points from the period youâre discussing.
Three main themes or subjects is a common structure for essays. Depending on the length of the essay, you could split the themes into three body paragraphs, or three longer sections with several paragraphs covering each theme.
As you create the outline, look critically at your categories and points: Are any of them irrelevant or redundant? Make sure every topic you cover is clearly related to your thesis statement.
When you have your material organized into several categories, consider what order they should appear in.
Your essay will always begin and end with an introduction and conclusion , but the organization of the body is up to you.
Consider these questions to order your material:
Within each paragraph, youâll discuss a single idea related to your overall topic or argument, using several points of evidence or analysis to do so.

Even when you do not have to hand it in, writing an essay outline is an important part of the writing process . Itâs a good idea to write one (as informally as you like) to clarify your structure for yourself whenever you are working on an essay.
If you have to hand in your essay outline , you may be given specific guidelines stating whether you have to use full sentences. If youâre not sure, ask your supervisor.
When writing an essay outline for yourself, the choice is yours. Some students find it helpful to write out their ideas in full sentences, while others prefer to summarize them in short phrases.
You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, itâs okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why youâre doing so.

The norfolk county district attorney's office says it plans to retry the case..
By Abby Patkin
Following days of deliberations and multiple notes from the deadlocked jury, Judge Beverly Cannone has declared a mistrial in the high-profile and often contentious Karen Read murder trial.
The jury was tasked with determining whether Read, 44, drunkenly and intentionally backed her SUV into her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, on a snowy night in Canton two years ago. Lawyers for the Mansfield woman had alleged she was framed in a coverup.
A unanimous jury is needed for any conviction or acquittal, and jurors ultimately failed to reach a consensus, despite Cannone’s last-ditch effort Monday morning to break the deadlock using the so-called “dynamite charge.”
“Despite our rigorous efforts, we continue to find ourselves at an impasse. Our perspectives on the evidence are starkly divided,” the jury foreperson wrote in a note to Cannone around 2:30 p.m.
Photos & videos: the scene after the judge declared a mistrial in karen read’s murder trial, karen read murder trial: are you surprised jurors couldn’t reach a decision.
While some jurors believed prosecutors met their burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, others felt the evidence fell short, according to the note.
“The deep division is not due to a lack of effort or diligence, but rather a sincere adherence to our individual principles and moral convictions,” the foreperson wrote. “To continue to deliberate would be futile and only serve to force us to compromise these deeply held beliefs.”
Following Cannone’s declaration of a mistrial, O’Keefe’s mother sat with her head hung, quietly wiping away tears. As the courtroom emptied out, Read bounded over to hug her parents and brother.
In a brief statement, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said it intends to retry the case against Read. Cannone set a status hearing for 2 p.m. on July 22 to determine next steps.
“First, we thank the O’Keefe family for their commitment and dedication to this long process,” the DA’s office said. “They maintained sight of the true core of this case — to find justice for John O’Keefe.”
Jurors faced an uphill battle in their quest for consensus, given the controversial evidence at stake in Read’s case and the intense coverage of the trial across social media, national news outlets, and the blogosphere.
The first indication of trouble came in a note Friday, when jurors reported they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict despite an “exhaustive review” and “diligent consideration” of the evidence.
Shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, the jury said it remained at an impasse.
“Judge Cannone, despite our commitment to the duty entrusted to us, we find ourselves deeply divided by fundamental differences in our opinions and state of mind,” Monday’s note read. “The divergence in our views are not rooted in a lack of understanding or effort but deeply held convictions that each of us carry, ultimately leading to a point where consensus is unattainable. We recognize the weight of this admission and the implications it holds.”
Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally argued the jury hadn’t yet completed its due and thorough deliberations.
“This jury heard I believe about 29 days or so of testimony, 657 different exhibits marked as evidence, 74 different witnesses who testified before them,” Lally said Monday morning. He noted the length of deliberations thus far didn’t even equate to one hour of discussion for each day of testimony.
However, defense attorney David Yannetti noted jurors’ language about “fundamental” disagreements.
“Our view is that it’s time for Tuey-Rodriguez , your honor,” Yannetti said, referring to the set of formal instructions often read to deadlocked juries. “They’ve come back now twice indicating essentially that they’re hopelessly deadlocked.”
Cannone ultimately sided with the defense, opting to read the Tuey-Rodriguez charge.
“I think this has been an extraordinary jury,” she said. “I’ve never seen a note like this reporting to be at an impasse.”
The Tuey-Rodriguez charge essentially tells jurors there’s no reason to believe another jury would be better suited to decide the case, or that either the prosecution or defense would be able to offer clearer evidence in the event of a retrial. The instructions also remind jurors it’s their duty to decide the case if they can do so conscientiously.
With a possible life sentence on the line if Read were convicted of second-degree murder, the stakes were high. Read was also charged with manslaughter while operating a motor vehicle under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The OUI manslaughter charge carries a sentence of five to 20 years in prison, and Read faced up to 10 years behind bars if found guilty of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Speaking to reporters briefly outside the courthouse, Read’s lawyers remained defiant.
“Folks, this is what it looks like when you bring false charges against an innocent person,” defense attorney Alan Jackson said, per video from NBC10 Boston . “The commonwealth did their worst. They brought the weight of the state based on spurious charges, based on compromised investigation and investigators, and compromised witnesses. This is what it looks like.”
“And guess what? They failed. They failed miserably, and they’ll continue to fail,” Jackson continued. “No matter how long it takes, no matter how long they keep trying, we will not stop fighting. We have no quit.”
Yannetti praised Read, telling reporters, “I am in awe of the strength and courage of this remarkable client that I’ve had the privilege of representing since day one.”
He also addressed the throngs of “Free Karen Read” supporters who have crowded around the courthouse day after day, proclaiming Read’s innocence.
“Your support was invaluable,” Yannetti said. “We are touched and we ask for your continued support.”
Canton resident Rita Lombardi, a prominent figure in the “Free Karen Read” movement, told WCVB the mistrial was not necessarily surprising.
“We expected it. We were hopeful for ‘not guilty,’” Lombardi said, according to WCVB video . “‘Guilty’ was not even an option in this case.”
She added: “It’s not the verdict that we wanted, but we accept it.”

This essay is about isolationism a national policy aimed at avoiding political or economic entanglements with other countries. The concept has been prevalent in various historical contexts significantly influencing the development foreign policies and global interactions of nations. Examples include the United States’ interwar period Japan’s Edo era and China’s Ming and Qing dynasties. While isolationism can protect a nation’s sovereignty and cultural identity it often leads to economic and political challenges. In today’s interconnected world the lessons from history highlight the complexities and consequences of adopting isolationist policies.
How it works
Isolationism is a strategy of a country to stay out of political or economic conflicts with other countries. The term is used a lot in political science and international relations. As part of this approach countries often stay away from partnerships deals and contracts and instead focus on their own problems. Over the course of world history isolationism has formed the paths of many countries affecting their growth foreign policies and relations with the rest of the world.
Itâs not just an idea that happened in one time or place; people have seen it in different ways in different countries and times.
One of the best examples is how the US tried to stay away from other countries during the years between the wars. After World War I the U.S. made decisions that were meant to keep it out of European wars and focus on its own growth. The feeling was summed up by the fact that many people backed the Kellogg-Briand Pact of 1928 which tried to stop using war as a tool of national policy. Even so the start of World War II showed that isolationism had its limits. Eventually global wars and economic interdependencies drew the U.S. back into international issues.
With its Edo era (1603â1868) Japan is another country that shows how isolationism can work. The Tokugawa shogunate put in place the sakoku policy at this time which made it very hard for other countries to trade and affect Japan. Japan kept its internal security and cultural unity for more than two hundred years by isolating itself. But because Japan was cut off from the rest of the world it fell behind Western powers in terms of military and scientific progress. When Commodore Perryâs Black Ships arrived in Japan in 1853 they ended the countryâs isolation and forced it to become open to foreign trade. This led to fast development.
The way China has dealt with isolationism in the past is also instructive. During the Ming and Qing dynasties China made rules that made it harder for other countries to trade and talk to them. Even though the Great Wall was mostly built for defense it represented this larger plan to keep outside forces at bay. But the Opium Wars in the middle of the 1800s showed how weak such a strategy was. The deals that followed which were often seen as unfair forced China to open several ports to Western powers. This was a big change from China being isolated to reluctantly joining the Western alliance.
There are times when isolationism is helpful like when it helps protect a countryâs authority and national character but it usually causes problems in the long run. Isolationist policies can slow down economic growth by making it harder to get to foreign markets resources and new technologies. As Japan and China have shown they can leave a country politically unprepared for changes and wars on a world scale. Also in a world that is becoming more and more linked being completely alone is almost difficult. With todayâs technology contact and transportation itâs hard for any country to stay completely isolated.
Isolationism has had a big impact on world events in many different ways. It shows how hard it is for countries to find the right mix between protecting themselves and working with other countries. It makes sense to want to focus on domestic issues and avoid battles with other countries but because international ties are always changing a more balanced approach is often needed. History shows that conservative policies may provide short-term relief but they can also be very bad when global circumstances require a change in strategy.
Isolationism is still a topic of conversation today as countries try to figure out how to deal with the challenges of globalization. People are still arguing about the best ways to protect national interests while still taking part in the global economy. Isolationism today usually shows up as policies that try to lessen reliance on foreign companies support local businesses and make it harder for people to come to the country. History on the other hand shows how important it is to take a balanced view that looks at both the pros and cons of solitary tactics.
Finally isolationism is a complicated idea that has deep roots in the past of the world. Several countries have used it to protect their independence keep their national character and stay out of trouble with other countries. But the long-term effects of these kinds of laws often show how hard it is to stay separated in a world where everything is linked. While countries are still trying to figure out how to deal with these problems the US Japan and China can teach us a lot about the difficulties and results of being isolated.
